One Lambert unhappy at Saints

Basingstoke Gazette: Paul Lambert Paul Lambert

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes Saints are facing an uphill battle this season to finish in the top six of the Premier League.

The club’s impressive start to the campaign has sparked hopes that they could upset the top-flight’s established order – and finish in the top six of the top flight for the first time since 1985.

However, Lambert is not expecting Saints to do that.

“I still think we’ll find the usual suspects up there,” said the Villa boss, whose side are currently enjoying the comfort of mid-table.

“They have some experienced heads as well as youth. They are a good side. “To sustain top six or seven is harder than ever. You look at the so-called top-six clubs and it will be hard to break in.”

Lambert does, however, view Saints as something of a model for what he wants to do at Villa Park.

“We’re a few years behind where we want to get to,” he said. “I have to be brave enough to do it.

Southampton have come through and done well. “There are two or three young lads who are performing there and it just shows that if you do get given time then you can maybe get one or two through from the academy.

“The new lads in the side have been at the club a lot longer than the current manager and it’s taken time to get them through, but they’re getting the rewards from it.”

Lambert added: “They’ve done really well.

“They’re a good side, but I’ve always thought that, from when Alan Pardew had them in League One, then Nigel Adkins, and now Mauricio Pochettino.

“The thing is sustaining it. I still expect the usual sides will be up there at the end of the season.

“Southampton have started the season really well.

“They brought in some big players and we have to go down there, get a foothold in it and take the game to them, which we’ll try to do.”

I realise he can't be too positive about us as he has a team talk to do later today, but a least we are trying to go about football the correct way, playing and the running of the club

He should be concentrating on his own team problems, we will concentrate on ours, which are not inconsiderable at the moment, without the work rate of Spider we may need to adjust a little, but depends on what side that Villa put out, we should give them some respect but not overdo it, on paper we should still be the better side, if all things are equal. I was very impressed with vocal support from the Palace fans last evening, if we can create a racket like that and get fully behind our lads we can be the 12th man and carry them through, this is a critical game and may be more significant than the last two games so no whingeing or whimping out, this is a night to roar and shout, COYRs.

Paul Lambert is not a good coach and only rely on Agbonlahor and Benteke. I still don't understand his team selection how can you leave your best asset on the bench like Albrighton and N'zogbia. I don't get it a good win for Southampton tonight 2-0 or 4-1

Paul Lambert IS a good coach and he proved it by taking Norwich from L1 to the PL and kept them there before moving on At Villa he has had very little money but kept them up by using young players Ring any bells It wa good to see the owner stand by him

It will be games like this where we are missing some key players that will determine our season. A good win will show we are on the right path. No shots on our goal, solid defence and a couple of goals up front.

I think Paul Lambert needs to face a Pochettino side before he makes comments like this. He only faced Adkins last season and the pressing style we now employ is going to be a bit of a shock for him tonight. Most of the managers that have come up against us recently (including Moyes and Arsene) think we will be there or thereabouts.

It might be he's been at the bottle! He may well be right though.
Next season we'll earn our top six status, this year we'll earn our top ten status. Happy to be proven wrong by spring next year however.

I think come the end of the season is when Saints can really take stock of if they are where they intended to be...they haven't set any targets because they want the players to strive for the top...if you have a team targeting 5th then you will only ever finish around that...if you go out looking to win the league then you could get 4th or above...The Southampton Way is anything is possible...the rule book is there to be broken and so is the teams that finish in the top 4 each year!

that's your opinion, many others think he has done alright. as for leaving his best assets on the bench again your opinion, you might think that they are his best payers but you don't see them day in day out and don't know if they suit the system he wants to play. I don't know either so I don't pass judgement on team selection. I might think that he has picked the wrong players but I don't think that any prem manager/coach is bad because they don't agree with me.

Anyone expecting us just to roll them over tonight may be in for a surprise AV have got real pace up front and quite often play 433. Plus I think they have the best equal away record in the league.
Just cut out the long balls going to Benteke and Agbon and the job will be half done, then hold our wingbacks back a bit more until we are comfortably out of sight.
It may ot be easy.
