BASINGSTOKE RFC suffered a bad day at the office, as they went down to a rare home defeat at the hands of visiting Tring 28-7 on Saturday.
The home side had their opportunities, but never really were able to capitalise on them and were behind after just two minutes to a converted try.
Worse was to follow soon after, as Tring extended their lead to 14-0, as the ball was hacked forward and taken over the line.
’Stoke were then given a chance to get on the scoreboard, but Andy Barnes missed a couple of penalties from either side of the halfway line.
In the first-half the home side may have had a lot of possession, but they were punished by the visitors, who added a third converted try from a cross kick out to an unmarked winger.
’Stoke finished the half the better team, but with nothing to show for it as they trailed 21-0.
The first score of the second-half, saw Tring add a fourth try just before the hour mark, to end any hopes of a ’Stoke comeback.
The home side’s pressure finally paid off as the impressive Chris Kiernan went over, after a nice maul on 66 minutes. Dave Byett kicked over the conversion.
‘Stoke nearly had the final word in the game, but fly-half Barnes’ was adjudged to have gone into touch when he ran down the wing.
Basingstoke are on their travels next week with a trip to Barnes.
