FINAL SCORE - Basingstoke Bison 6 Guildford Flames 4

A great game and an important win for the Bison. They are now just two points behind the Flames in the table, while allowing the visitors to come back from 4-0 down would have been a psychological blow.

Reaction from Bison player/coach Doug Sheppard to follow.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 6 Guildford Flames 4 - Aaron Connolly (58:57)

It looked set for a tight finish, but that should seal victory for the Bison. AARON CONNOLLY gets the goal, firing home from Doug Sheppard and Joe Greener.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 5 Guildford Flames 4 - David Longstaff (58:15)

The Flames make good use of the penalty, DAVID LONGSTAFF forcing the puck past Skinns. Branislav Kvertan and David Savage get the helpers.

Carl Graham goes to the bin for that hit. A 2+10 penalty for checking from behind so that's his night over.

Rick Plant is down following a high hit, sparking a melee.

The hosts get themselves into a real mess at the back. Rick Plant finds himself with an age to pick out a pass from behind the net but Longstaff is unable to get on the end of it.

The Bison are unable to make the most of the powerplay. They got a couple of shots away but could not find the net.

The Bison get a powerplay as Andy Hemmings is sent to the sin-bin. Two minutes for interference at 52:21.

Almost another for the visitors. Joe Baird was caught out looking to switch lines and Ben Campbell was through, but Skinns kept him out.

The Bison take a timeout. Just over 10 minutes left.

The Bison see off the powerplay with little incident.

The Bison lose Connolly for two minutes. Delay of game at 46:28.

Basingstoke Bison 5 Guildford Flames 3 - Milos Melicherik (44:19)

Rick Plant pulls the puck back from behind the net and MILOS MELICHERIK fires over Dean Skinns' shoulder from the slot.

There's been a really good tempo to the early stages of the period, but neither netminder has really been tested yet.

The third period is underway. It's now been decided that Cam Wynn also gets an assist on that fifth goal. Really?

The players are out. My apple is not finished.

Almost forgot to eat my fruit. Now trying to stuff a banana and an apple down before the third period starts.

END OF SECOND PERIOD - Basingstoke Bison 5 Guildford Flames 2

A period that really ebbed and flowed. The Flames looked beaten at 4-0 but the first goal woke them up and the Bison were on the back foot for a while. Melachrino's goal may be crucial in the final reckoning.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 5 Guildford Flames 2 - Andy Melachrino (38:14)

That's a great individual goal. ANDY MELACHRINO picks up the puck on the left and beats a couple of men to take it behind the net before firing home from an acute angle.

Tomas Karpov gets an assist - but that was all Melachrino, just as the powerplay came to an end.

The Bison get a powerplay when Branislav Kvertan gets a two-minute penalty at 36:13 after losing his helmet and playing on.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 4 Guildford Flames 2 - David Longstaff (34:20)

It had got scrappy, and now it's not so comfortable for the hosts.

It's a scrappy goal as well, DAVID LONGSTAFF beating Dean Skinns from close range following an icing face-off. Branislav Kvertan and Milos Melicherik get the assists.

The Flames are back at the races, enjoying some pressure.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 4 Guildford Flames 1 - Tom Duggan (29:41)

Guildford's heads seemed to have dropped and they were making mistakes all over the place - but that might lift them.

Two seconds before the powerplay ends, Rick Plant fires the puck across goal and TOM DUGGAN is in the slot to fire home. Paul Dixon also gets an assist.

The Bison lose Joe Miller to the sin-bin, two minutes for slashing at 27:43.

Close again for the Bison as Joe Baird hits the post. Cam Wynn also forced a save out of Lee.

Almost a fifth as Melachrino and Karpov combine to feed Wales, but he fires over.

The Bison really have their visitors on the rack now. Shots flying in from everywhere.

The Flames have decided to replace Hadfield with Mark Lee between the sticks.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 4 Guildford Flames 0 - Joe Greener (21:26)

That's a delightful finish. Zach Sullivan feeds the puck down the left channel and JOE GREENER, with his back to goal, flicks it between his legs and past James Hadfield in the Flames goal.

It had been a good start to the period for the hosts, with Connolly going close early on.

The second period is under way.

The players are out for the second period, before I can finish my pear. Schoolboy error.

After all that excitement, my fruit may have to wait until the second interval!

END OF FIRST PERIOD - Basingstoke Bison 3 Guildford Flames 0

Wow! Time to catch our breath. After a slow start, the game really kicked into life there and the Bison hold a very strong lead considering their defensive record here.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 3 Guildford Flames 0 - Tomas Karpov (18:04)

That's three goals in 94 seconds! This time it's on the powerplay after Neil Liddiard went to the bin for tripping.

The Bison waste no time making the most of their man advantage, TOMAS KARPOV touching home from close range after a good pass from Joe Greener.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 2 Guildford Flames 0 - Miroslav Vantroba (17:40)

MIROSLAV VANTROBA fires in from the blue line and the shot goes all the way through, doubling the Bison lead.

GOAL - Basingstoke Bison 1 Guildford Flames 0 - Joe Miller (16.30)

That one does count. Joe Greener pulls the puck back from behind the net and JOE MILLER is there to force it home from close range.

So close to the opening goal as Aaron Connolly's shot from the left wing hits the crossbar.

Another powerplay survived for the hosts.

The Bison lose Andrew Melachrino to the penalty box, two minutes of Flames powerplay at 11:08.

The Bison have the ball in the net but it's disallowed, Joe Miller adjudged to have kicked it in.

Great skill in the build-up, Miller nicking the puck past a defender and skating around him.

Another good Bison attack forces the Flames netminder to cover the puck after a scramble in front of the net.

A bit of pressure for the Bison but there's no end product and Guildford clear.

The Bison survive. Guildford had a couple of decent shots towards the end of the powerplay but Dean Skinns was equal to them.

The Bison bench are penalised for interference at 3:36 so Michael Wales will spend two minutes in the penalty box.

Not a lot of goalmouth action in the first two minutes.

Finally, we are under way. And the bloke along the row has just told me I don't smell!

Now, everyone stands for the arrival of the Bison and, of course, the national anthem.

This pre-match stuff does take ages. Finally, after the Countdown theme and some more shouting from the bloke on the microphone, here come the Flames.

The answer is yes, but the fruit may have to wait for the first interval as the referees are out on the ice.

Still waiting for the slightly crazy Welsh guy I was sat next to last time I was here to turn up. At the moment there are five seats between me and the nearest specator. Hope I don't smell.

Final preparations being done before the players take to the ice. Do I have time to eat my sandwiches?

Guildford currently sit top of the table, but the Bison are only four points behind them in third.

Good evening and welcome to live updates from the Basingstoke Arena, where the Basingstoke Bison are hosting local rivals the Guildford Flames in the English Premier League.
