NORTH Hampshire golfer Justin Rose has been named on the 10-strong shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013.

The former Robert May's School pupil fulfilled the ambition of a lifetime by winning the US Open at Merion in June, becoming the first Englishman to win one of golf's major tournaments since 1996.

He joins sailor Ben Ainslie, cricketer Ian Bell, athletes Hannah Cockroft, Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu, cyclist Chris Froome, rugby star Leigh Halfpenny, jockey AP McCoy and tennis ace Andy Murray on the shortlist.

Wimbledon champion Murray is heavy favourite to win the prestigeous award, the winner of which will be decided by a public vote. Both the vote and ceremony will take place on December 15.
