Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino believes his squad deserve praise to adapting to new training methods.
Much has been made of the intense physical regime that Pochettino has implemented since taking charge at the club.
Many of the club’s top players have talked openly about how hard it is but how fit they feel as a result.
Included in the schedule is some double session training days and Pochettino explained: “We work as we live, as we understand football.
“Not always do we have a double session – there will perhaps be a week where we have a double session and a week where we don’t.
“It depends on the physical fitness of the players and the game we have in that week ahead.
“It’s all down to the planning of how we plan ahead of these games and carry out the physical tasks we want the players to accomplish.
“It’s also about the day to day and how we evaluate how the players are doing, not just physically but also psychologically.
“The day to day also yields decisions that we have to make in terms of the squad and the players have accepted very well to have these double sessions, to have this physical challenge and to accept the new way of how we want to train and to play.”
