Basingstoke Hockey Club progress in cup competition

BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s men’s first team won 4-3 in the opening round of the Vase against visiting Blackheath and Old Elthamians.
The home side quickly opened the scoring as Dan Bowden set-up Dean Record to deflect the ball past the goalkeeper.
The visitors levelled, but Basingstoke led again after Grant Rouse converted a pass from Bowden.
Blackheath equalised in the second half, but the home side hit two quick goals. Sam King slapped a perfect pass to Clinton Douglass and Rouse turned provider for Record. With minutes to go, Blackheath scored a late consolation.
The previous day in the league, the first XI won 3-2 away to Camberley and Farnborough.
The visitors equalised with a breakaway goal as Dave Stones set up Grant Rouse. The sides then traded goals as Rouse set up Stones.
After the break, Basingstoke scored the winner – Jacques Lourens, with a fierce drive following a penalty corner.
Douglass scored the only goal as the second team beat visiting Portsmouth and Southsea 1-0.
The third team won 5-1 at Gosport thanks to a brace each for Martin Powell and Will Calhoun. Cameron Saint completed the scoring.
The fourth team continued their impressive start to the season with a 9-0 victory over Lavant, with seven goals coming in the second half.
Basingstoke opened the scoring after Sam Payne’s cross from outside the D was deflected in by a defender and it became 2-0 thanks to Dan Holding’s penalty flick.
After the break, Holding completed his hat-trick, Andy Footman scored from a well-worked short corner routine, while Sam Crossman, man-of-the-match Jamie Day, Jonny Lancelles and John Bantges completed the rout.
The fifths beat Yateley 3-1, as Simon Dann netted his own rebound, while Alex Stringer and Phil Reid scored their first goals in the men’s league.
Basingstoke Ladies first XI survived three yellow cards, including one for goalkeeper Gemma Carswell, as they beat visiting Wanderers 2-1.
Catriona Bausor scored a stunning late winner after Roxy O’Dea had given them the lead with the team’s first short corner.
The seconds won 3-2 home to Gosport. Catherine Woodliffe and Sarah Traynor both scored as they converted Rebecca Donaldson’s crosses and Sarah Mainprise added the third after the break.
The third string lost 4-0 to Winchester, but the fourths enjoyed a 7-0 success over Aldershot and Fareham.
Helen Garrett scored the first from the top of the D and a clean strike from Laura Mallon added a second.
By half-time, it was 4-0, after Katie Smith’s pass was deflected in by Hayley Rouse and Georgina Smith netted the fourth.
After the break, Katie Smith scored her first league goal and Georgina Smith wrapped up the scoring with her hat-trick.
The fifths won 2-1 at Fleet and Ewshot thanks to Louise Posthuma and Kirsty Posthuma.
