REPORT - Sheffield Steeldogs 5 Basingstoke Bison 4 (Pens)
THE Basingstoke Bison scored the game tying goal, just three seconds before the final buzzer, but then suffered the heartache of a 5-4 penalty shot loss in Sheffield on Tuesday night.
All three Herd shooters Tomas Karpov, Joe Rand and Joe Greener failed to find a way past man-of-the-match Bradley Day.
Steeldogs' new import Mariusz Jakubik fired past Dean Skinns with his side’s first shot which proved to be the winner.
It was Sheffield who led after the first 20 minutes, thanks to their player/coach Andre Payette.
The Bison took just 38 seconds of the second session to equalise, as Joe Miller and Greener set-up Rand to score.
Sheffield re-took the lead as they netted twice in just over a minute, from Lubomir Korhon and Andrew Hirst to give them a 3-1 advantage at 35:08.
The Herd hit back 37 seconds later from Andy Melachrino, and then levelled the game from Rand on the powerplay.
However, with just 12 seconds remaining in the second period, the home side edged in front again as Jakubik scored to make it 4-3.
With a minute left in the game, Bison goalie Skinns was removed for the extra skater and Miller scored to force the game into overtime.
The extra session was only 47 seconds old, the home side were given a powerplay.
Despite being shorthanded, Bison man-of-the-match Greener was able to breakaway, but he was hauled down and to the amazement of the visiting players no penalty was called.
Miller took out his frustration on the officials, which earned him a 10 minute misconduct penalty.
Overtime failed to split the teams, but Sheffield won after a shoot-out.
