Hampshire Irons stage fightback to progress in North Hants May Cup
BASINGSTOKE and District Saturday League Division Two leaders Hampshire Irons staged a fine comeback to progress to the second round of the North Hants May Cup.
Hosting Andover League outfit Globe Sports, Irons took the lead through Jay Greene. The visitors hit back to lead 2-1 and while Chris Arnold levelled, a Luke Higgins own-goal gave Globe the advantage at half-time. However, second-half goals from Green, Tom Chant and Kieran Dent gave Irons a 5-3 victory.
Pure Spartan also beat a team from Andover, defeating hosts ABC United 3-1 with goals from Steve Tickner, Russell Williams and Ross Mortlock.
Skewers’ game against Broughton Reserves was abandoned after 25 minutes due to a serious injury. Mark Doran and Simon Jane had Skewers in front but Dan Szakel suffered a broken leg and with the ambulance not arriving for 90 minutes, the game was called off.
Stephen Burgess scored twice as Tadley Calleva A beat Baughurst AFC Reserves 5-0. The other goals were scored by Kyle Theodore, Rob Laing and Michael Abbott.
Herriard Sports enjoyed their first win of the season, beating DJS Telecoms 5-1. Herriard were three up inside 10 minutes, Sam Weber scoring twice and Tyler Lee netting the third. Weber went on to score two more, either side of Nick Saunders’ lone reply for DJS.
Overton United have two teams in the second round after their A and B teams both won. The A team beat AFC White Hart 4-2, with goals from Robson Poreire, Siyani Thomas, John Sayers and Craig Ralph getting them through.
The B team trailed AFC Berg 3-1 at half-time, Kieran Allayne and Jon Richardson’s brace putting Berg in control. Darren White had replied for Overton and he added a second after the break, while further goals from Lee Garrett and Graham Hargraves saw Overton through.
Chineham Albion thumped Labour Club 6-0 thanks to braces from Leon Dolton and Russell Smith, with Ajay Walton and Brad Yates completing the scoring.
AFC Aldermaston A beat Bengal Brasserie 4-1, with Jack Sedgewick hitting a hat-trick. That had the visitors 3-0 up on the hour and while Tom Green pulled one back, Richard Nash added a fourth for Aldermaston.
Lee Gregory and Nathan Read were the Basingstoke Athletic scorers as they beat Andover Dynamos 2-1, while Hook Reserves beat Sherborne Reserves 5-0. An own-goal and further strikes from Lawrence Wright and Tom Goddard had Hook 3-0 up at the break, with Dan Framp and Jack McKee netting in the second half.
Bounty United lost 6-0 at Sutton Scotney 6-0, Twenty-Ten went down 3-0 at Andover New Street Swifts and Bramley United lost 4-2 to Kingsclere despite goals from Simon Goff and Josh Arthur.
Welly Old Boys Reserves, who went down to nine men after just five minutes due to injury, lost 4-1 at Kings Somborne, Michael Morey getting their goal.
