Basingstoke Bison player/coach Doug Sheppard's weekly column

AFTER playing well against Guildford the previous week, it was disappointing not to pick up four points last weekend.
We talked at the beginning of the season about how important it was to work hard in every game, whatever position the team we were playing against held in the league.
I hope that our defeat against Peterborough will drive that point home.
We came out flat and they out-worked us. That’s not acceptable, especially so early in the season. It’s a lesson we learned to our cost last year.
We competed with Manchester and Guildford for top spot all season. We won five times out of six against Manchester, shared wins with Guildford, yet lost four times each to Sheffield and Milton Keynes, who finished below us in the league.
This weekend we welcome the free-scoring Manchester Phoenix, who are flying high at the top of the table, and then travel to Bracknell for a local derby on Sunday.
I have no doubt everybody will be up for these games. We just need to approach all our games with the same intensity.
Not that our game against Telford lacked intensity. It was full of incident and we could feel how involved the crowd became.
As a coach, I worry that frequent breaks in the game disrupt the flow of play. As a player, it seemed as if the game would never end. But it did seem to provide plenty to talk about in the bar afterwards.
The Peterborough team played as if their jobs depended on the result of the game. That’s the attitude we need to show this weekend, against teams at opposite ends of the table.
Time to get back on a winning streak, with the opportunity to enjoy free-flowing hockey.
See you there.
