Basingstoke Blizzards lose first basketball game of the season
THE Basingstoke Blizzards did not get their Wessex League campaign off to best of starts, as they lost to the visiting Woodley Warriors 76-56, writes Marcel Mavronicholas.
The first basket of the game went to the home side’s Aaron Taylorson and after that the lead changed hands several times.
Joey Haynes made the difference for the Blizzards as his free throws and a three pointer edged them in front 15-14, but by the end of the quarter Woodley led 24-18.
The second quarter saw the home side struggle as they scored only seven points to Woodley’s 26.
After half-time the Blizzards got back to an aggressive man defence and kept Woodley at bay.
However, a poor free throw average hampered their comeback and they still trailed at the end of third quarter 56-43.
After the interval, Woodley quickly added another nine points to their tally, and with the Blizzards still struggling to convert their free throws they ended up being beaten 76-56.
Coach Marcel Mavronicholas said: “We came up against a strong, physical and well drilled side, and they were better on the day. We will need to improve for our next game away at Farnborough.”
Scoring: Taylorson 18 points, Gerrard 15, Haynes 11, Darlow 4, Buen, T Mavronicholas 3 Grabudela 2.
