Last minute equaliser denies Whitchurch United a win
NEW striker Nic Turpin scored a goal on his debut – but Whitchurch United were denied a Wessex League Premier Division victory by a last-minute equaliser.
Hosting Brockenhurst at Longmeadow on Saturday, Whitchurch opened the scoring in the second half through Turpin, who signed from Winchester City last week.
The striker got on the end of Pa Touray’s free-kick to give his new side the lead on 65 minutes and Whitchurch looked set to secure all three points as Tom Hindmarsh made some good saves to keep out the visitors.
However, Whitchurch fell just short, conceding an equaliser in the final minute as Carlo Tate headed home from a free-kick.
Whitchurch assistant manager John Rutledge said: “Nic Turpin showed his strength and ability holding the ball up and he looked dangerous around the box.
“Despite not being at full strength and having to move players round we played well all over the pitch. I thought we defended well and to be honest the only way Brockenhurst were going to score was with a set piece.”
The result leaves Whitchurch 10th in the table after a solid start to life in the Premier Division. They are at home again on Saturday, when they play host to struggling Verwood.
