LIVERPOOL 0 SAINTS 1
SAINTS SUB (89 mins): Jay Rodriguez off, Jack Cork on.
The crowd go wild after Dejan Lovren's earlier goal.
Nathaniel Clyne cautioned for time wasting (81 mins).
Rickie Lambert before his substitution.
CHANCE (78 mins): Liverpool work the ball out to Daniel Sturridge in space on the left. He winds up a shot from the corner of the area, but bends the ball over the bar.
SAINTS SUB (75 mins): Adam Lallana off, James Ward-Prowse on.
CHANCE (67 mins): Luke Shaw bursts forward, rides his luck as the ball deflects off a couple of Liverpool players and finds himself with a clear sight of goal. But his right-foot effort is brilliantly saved by Simon Mignolet, who then has to make another magnificent stop after the ball rebounded off Mamadou Sakho and nearly went in.
Liverpool's Raheem Sterling and Southampton's Dejan Lovren.
SAINTS SUB (66 mins): Rickie Lambert off, Steven Davis on.
CHANCE (60 mins): Victor Moses is tripped just outside the area, giving Liverpool a free-kick in a dangerous position. Steven Gerrard again takes it, this time firing in a low drive towards the far corner, but again Artur Boruc is equal to it.
Southampton's Dejan Lovren celebrates his goal.
CHANCE (54 mins): Saints go so close to doubling their lead straight away. Dani Osvaldo works room just outside the area and fires in a low right-foot shot that Simon Mignolet does wonderfully well to get down to and keep out.
Liverpool 0 Saints 1 (Dejan Lovren 53)
Saints take a surprise lead at Anfield, and it is summer signing Dejan Lovren with a memorable first goal for the club. Adam Lallana swings in a corner and Lovren outmuscles Daniel Agger, before planting a header past Simon Mignolet. Magnificent stuff for Saints.
CHANCE (47 mins): Nathaniel Clyne intercepts a loose ball out of the Liverpool defence and plays in Adam Lallana, but Simon Mignolet comes out on top in a one-on-one duel with the Saints captain, turning his right-foot shot behind for a corner. A great chance gone begging.
The second half is underway.
A change for Liverpool at the interval, as Raheem Sterling replaces Iago Aspas.

CHANCE (45 mins): Steven Gerrard whips a cross in from the right, which picks out the near-post run of Daniel Sturridge. The unmarked striker loops a header towards the far corner, but it drifts over the bar and onto the roof of the net.
Liverpool's Victor Moses and Southampton's Victor Wanyama.
CHANCE (37 mins): Artur Boruc to the rescue again for Saints. Steven Gerrard's quick throw releases Victor Moses down the left. He drives past Jose Fonte and into the area, but his effort from a tight angle is diverted behind by the visiting keeper.
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard rues a missed chance as Southampton's Arthur Boruc saves his free kick.
PENALTY APPEAL (32 mins): Daniel Sturridge is tripped by Dejan Lovren just inside the corner of the area. The Liverpool forward was adamant it should have been a spot kick, but referee Neil Swarbrick was not so convinced and allowed play to continue.
CHANCE (26 mins): Adam Lallana twists and turns past Jordan Henderson and delivers a cross from the left. Kolo Toure and Steven Gerrard make a mess of clearing it, with the ball dropping to Rickie Lambert eight yards out. It's a great chance for the Saints striker, but he misjudges his left-foot volley and slices it tamely forward, where a grateful Simon Mignolet gathers it.
CHANCE (21 mins): Victor Wanyama is dispossessed by Iago Aspas, who tries to drive past Jose Fonte, but has his run blocked. Referee Neil Swarbrick awards a free-kick to the home side 25 yards out. Steven Gerrard whips his effort over the wall, but Artur Boruc flings himself to his right to make a magnificent one-handed flying save.
Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho and Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne battle for the ball.
CHANCE (13 mins): Nearly an opening for Saints. A sublime touch from Dani Osvaldo sets Adam Lallana racing away down the right. However, Martin Skrtel is there to intercept his ball towards Jay Rodriguez, who had made a brilliant run through the centre.
CHANCE (3 mins): Liverpool break away down the right and work the ball into Daniel Sturridge. He lays it into the path of Jordan Henderson 18 yards out, but his shot is straight at Artur Boruc.
Referee Neil Swarbrick gets the game underway.
The teams are out here at Anfield. Kick-off now just a few minutes away. We will have updates here for you throughout the game...
The teams are out on the pitch at Anfield, going through their warm-ups. Saints will be in their black away kit this afternoon.
Saints keeper Artur Boruc has again been incredibly bullish about the team's prospects this season, reiterating his opinion that they can challenge for a Champions League spot this season and that the Premier League title is not beyond them in the future. Read the full story here.
Saints have scored just twice in their opening four Premier League games this season, leading to a few questions for Mauricio Pochettino about the club's attack. The manager answered some of those this week. Here is a snippet of what he had to say...
The equilibrium and the balance is already there. We are the team with the second highest amount of possession in the league so we are having a really good balance between the attack and defence. What we need to do is stop making heroes out of all the goalkeepers that come and visit us and start scoring goals. I’m pretty sure that will happen sooner or later because it’s a matter of luck and it’s a matter of time. If the game against West Ham had finished 3-0 we would be talking about a completely different subject. If you analyse the overall run of the game we created so many chances that should have been goals. Instead we made a hero out of the visiting goalkeeper, but I’m pretty sure that won’t happen again.Mauricio Pochettino
Morgan Schneiderlin will make his 200th Saints appearance in this afternoon's match. The midfielder, who joine the club from Strasbourg in 2008, has carved out an excellent career at St Mary's so far, winning last year's player of the season award. He has drawn high praise from the Saints captain, Adam Lallana, already this week.
Saints are unchanged from the team that drew 0-0 against West Ham last weekend. Midfielder Jack Cork returns to the bench, in place of Guly do Prado. liverpool make three changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Swansea on Monday. Jose Enrique, Andre Wisdom and the injured Philippe Coutinho miss out, with Kolo Toure, Daniel Agger and Iago Aspas replacing them.
LIVERPOOL: Mignolet, Toure, Sakho, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard, Aspas, Moses, Sturridge.
Subs: Jones, Kelly, Sterling, Enrique, Wisdom, Ibe, Alberto.
SAINTS: Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Rodriguez, Lambert, Osvaldo.
Subs: K Davis, S Davis, Ramírez, Ward-Prowse, Cork, Chambers, Hooiveld.
Referee: Neil Swarbrick.
The team news is expected to be out within the next ten minutes
The Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers carried out his weekly press duties on Thursday. Here is a clip of what he had to say to the media ahead of today's fixture...
Saints squad news: Left-back Luke Shaw is fit for today's game, after limping off during last weekend's 0-0 draw with West Ham. The 18-year-old's problem was nothing serious, having suffered from cramp in that match. Fellow left-back Danny Fox remains a doubt with an ankle complaint and striker Tadanari Lee, who recently returned to the first-team fold, may also miss out.
Liverpool squad news: Philippe Coutinho is the big loss for Liverpool today. The Brazilian playmaker suffered a shoulder injury in Monday’s 2-2 draw at Swansea and is facing a number of weeks on the sidelines. The Reds will also be without Luis Suárez, as the forward serves the final game of his lengthy suspension for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic last season. Daniel Agger, who scored the only goal when the teams met here last season, is also a doubt after injuring his ribs in a freak gym accident, with the defender hurting himself avoiding a falling weight, in an effort to prevent it landing on his foot.
Hello and welcome to this afternoon’s blog from Anfield, covering Saints’ trip to Liverpool. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are up against the early league leaders today and are looking to earn their first Premier League win since the opening day of the season. Saints were narrowly beaten here last term, with Liverpool defender Daniel Agger heading the only goal of the match, but they then produced a magnificent display to beat the Reds 3-1 at St Mary’s in March. Brendan Rodgers’ team haven’t lost since that day, though, but the home side will be without the influential duo of Luis Suárez and Philippe Coutinho today. It promises to be a good one this afternoon, so stay with us for the build-up, team news and match updates.
