Old boys come back to haunt Bison
FORMER Bison stars Alex Symonds and Stevie Lyle had a happy return to Basingstoke as they helped their new team the Swindon Wildcats, to a 2-1 victory in the English Premier League opener on Saturday night.
Both were summer signings for the Wiltshire outfit and it was defenceman Symonds who scored the game winner, which was somewhat ironic as he only scored once for the Herd all last season.
The Herd out shot Swindon 36-22, but goalie Lyle was beaten just once by a super blue line shot from Miroslav Vantroba in the opening period.
The Wildcats hit back to level it by the break from Henri Sandvik, before Symonds scored the game winner at 35:12.
After that neither side were able to add to their tally as Lyle and Dean Skinns, also playing against his former club, were not beaten.
The Herd had the better of the first and last periods, but it was not enough to win them the game leaving Bison player/coach Doug Sheppard to reflect on an opening day loss.
Sheppard said: “It is disappointing to lose, but it is early in the season and we have made few mistakes tonight. We got the lead and then I felt we sat back instead of trying to get a second and third goal, as we were playing well in the first period.
“We lost our way in the second and then played desperate in the third, but could not find a way to score.”
After two challenge games against Guildford and the league opener with Swindon, the plus point is the team have conceded just five goals, but on the minus side they have only scored four as ever game has finished with a 2-1 scoreline.
“We certainly have a few things to work on and we have to get sharper around the net.
“We have to start finding a way to win these low scoring games, which I am sure will happen and the guys will bounce back next weekend.”
The Bison had no game on Sunday night and are next in action on Saturday night when the Bracknell Bees are the visitors to the Basingstoke Arena.
