Basingstoke and District Tennis League round-up
THERE are still several promotion and relegation issues to be finalised in the Basingstoke and District Tennis League as the summer season enters the final weeks.
Beechdown A ladies snatched the Division One title from defending champions Andover A after a 6-2 success against Oakley A as Tina Woods/Clare Munns picked up a maximum for the new champions.
Overton still look favourites to take the Division Two title with one match remaining.
Odiham and Goodworth Clatford B can still get into the mix depending upon their remaining result. The Goodworth side won their penultimate match 6-2 at Hook.
There are still several matches to be played in Division Three before final positions are determined with Winchester, Mortimer A and Aldermaston B all with a good chance of taking the title.
Andover retained their mixed title without having to hit a ball after the only team that could catch them, Old Basing A, slipped up 6-2 to Goodworth Clatford.
They now need to win their final match to secure the runners-up spot after Beechdown A moved above them after a comfortable 8-0 win at already relegated Odiham.
Matt Moore/Andrea Butcher and Hoss Asfraf/Clare Munns made up the Beechdown side.
Overton A kept alive their hopes of staying in the top flight after they had a good win at Aldermaston A 5-3.
Oakley A confirmed their place by winning Division Two following an 8-0 success against Preston Candover B and a draw with nearest rivals and runners up RSF A.
Paul Rattue/Julie Frankland again proved unbeatable with maximums in both matches, while Kelvin Wilcox/Charlotte Toosey made up their winning team against Preston Candover.
The remaining places are all still to be decided with only one point separating the next five teams. Preston Candover A’s team of Charlie Carter/Clare Checketts and Richard Mole/Judith Mole beat Oakley B 8-0 as did RSF A against Overton B.
Beechdown C had already taken the Division Three title and confirmed their position with another 8-0 result in their final match against nearest challengers Aldermaston B.
Their team was Hoss Ashraf/Clare Munns and Darren Giddings and Emma Giddings.
Beechdown B got their first point of the season with a draw against Aldermaston B with Tim Williams and Christine Doig winning all their sets.
Oakley C beat Hook A 5-3 for their first win of the campaign and Totally Tennis B beat Kingsclere 6-2.
RSF B and Beechdown D are fighting it out for the Division Four title after they both won their latest matches.
Steve Brown/Tracey Telford and Kevin Still/Amanda Brundrett gave the leaders RSF B a 8-0 win at Whitchurch and a maximum from Phil Banfield and Aly Coughlan gave Beechdown D a 6-2 win at the same venue. Mortimer B moved up the table after a good 6-2 win at Odiham B.
With the Men’s Division One already secure, defending champions Andover A won their final match 7-1 at Old Basing A with Mike Prince and Jeff Lill being unbeaten.
Runners-up Kingsclere A slipped up their final game going down 6-2 to RSF A with Chris Wise and Stuart White getting a maximum for the RSF side.
Liam Hignett and Jo Robinson won all their sets for Overton A’s 6-2 win at relegated Oakley A. Any one of six teams can still win the Division Two title or get promotion with only three points separating them with most teams still with at least two matches to play.
Andover B moved up to second place after an 8-0 win in their final match thanks to the team of Hallam Doney/Sam Birks and John Snowden/Jeff Lill.
Beechdown B recorded the same score as they beat Winchester. Totally Tennis A have taken the Division Three title after a draw in their latest match at BDH.
The runners-up spot has gone to Waverley B on sets won from Odiham A. Waverley secured a draw in their final match with Mortimer thanks to a maximum from Tim Clist and Chris Clinch. Odiham defeated Goodworth Clatford 6-2 with Lee Aubrey and Peter Jealous winning all their sets. Bruce McKenzie and Andy Smith were another pair to pick up a maximum this time for Aldermaston B in their 6-2 win against BDH, while Mortimer A won 5-3 at Hook.
RSF B had already won the Division Three title and Beechdown C moved up into runners-up position after a 6-2 win against Oakley C.
Mike Chapman and Jeremy Thatcher got a maximum for Sherborne to earn them their first points in a 5-3 win over Oakley C.
Nick Dingwall and Martin Dingwall won all their sets for Totally Tennis B in a 6-2 win against Mortimer B and John Snowden and Rob Moon did the same for Andover C in a 7-1 success over Odiham B.
