Hat-trick for Sam Argent as Hartley Wintney progress in FA Cup
SAM Argent grabbed a hat-trick as 10-man Hartley Wintney moved into the first qualifying round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win at Badshot Lea last Friday.
The visitors scored the only goal of the first 45 minutes as a ball from Matt Partlow found Argent, who scored.
Early in the second-half, Carl Saunders picked up a second yellow card and was sent off.
The home side then levelled the game just after the hour and looked set to go on and win the tie.
However, Hartley replied thanks to a diving header from Argent to give them a 2-1 lead.
The home side came looking for an equaliser and, with eight minutes to go, they scored from close range.
Argent then completed his hat-trick with a superb piece of skill as he turned his marker and fired home.
Badshot tried to level it and send the game to a replay, but were unable to and Hartley’s reward is a home tie against fellow Combined Counties League Premier Division side Camberley Town on Saturday, September 14.
This is the last round before the Conference South clubs, including Basingstoke Town, enter the competition.
Dillon said: “I felt the second yellow card on Carl Saunders was harsh on the young lad as I don’t think he touched him.
“When they equalised and we were down to 10 men, I felt we were in trouble, but full credit to the boys – they battled away.”
This weekend, Hartley are on their travels to Hellenic League Premier Division side Flackwell Heath in the FA Vase.
Flackwell suffered their first league defeat last Saturday, having opened their campaign with a 9-0 demolishing of Kidlington, who Hartley beat in the FA Cup, so it is not going to be easy.
Dillon said: “We know they are a decent side, but we are playing well at the moment and I hope we can continue that.”
