Howard Park just miss out on second place in bowls league
HOWARD Park nearly grabbed second spot from Kingsclere Quails in Whitchurch League Division One.
With the three Park rinks leading comfortably after 15 ends, Mark Stillings fired at a head with Park holding three or four shots and three up, only to see the jack jump into the air and land on other woods to turn the count around to four for Kingsclere.
That was enough to secure them second spot and it was a case of the third L in bowls – line, length and luck – the final score being Howard Park 58 Kingsclere 43.
In Division Two, Alton Social finished up as champions, with Oakley A in second place.
Thornycroft A and Kingsclere Partridges were relegated as Oakley B avoided the drop by beating St Mary Bourne Eagles 49-37.
The Division Three title and relegation issues will be decided by the games between Whitchurch Yellows and Basingstoke Jokers.
Hook Foxes, with a late run, secured second slot in Division Four behind Town’s Diamonds thanks to a 47-43 win over Howard Park B.
The semi-final of the Stan Hardman competition took place last Thursday at Hook, with one match proving a walk over and the other a titanic struggle.
Fleet Cygnets beat Andover 67-33 and Cove drew on shots with Whitchurch (48-48) but won the match 4.5 points to 2.5.
The final will be held today – again at Hook at 2pm.
Loddon Vale played another friendly against West Berks, this time winning by 85-82.
The winning rinks were skipped by Brian Roberts (19-8) and Graham Jordan (15-10).
The losing rinks were Sheila Girle (16-14), John Dallaway (16-12), Don Lee (17-16) and Arthur Peters (15-9).
