Hook and Newnham Basics have to settle for fifth place at the end of a mixed season
HOOK and Newnham Basics had to settle for fifth spot in the Southern League Division One table after losing on the final day at Andover.
The toss proved to be the important factor with the wicket crumbling as the game went on, making Hook’s reply very difficult. Opener Ben Thane (43) and Matt Buckingham (29) made the top contributions in an all-out score of 152.
Earlier, Andover’s opening pair, Tim Lewis (94) and Greg Dawson (92), put on 203 for the first wicket in an impressive total of 284.
Looking back on the season, Hook’s cricket manager Keith Lovelock said: “I think it has been a mixed season with some good wins and big defeats.
“We have suffered with unavailability, but, on the flip side, that has given us the opportunity to bring some of the youngsters like Matt Buckingham and Alex Cates into the team.”
The club has a good youth policy right through, which can only bode well for the future.
Opener Ben Thane once again topped the batting with 589 runs, putting him sixth overall, while Matt Love (429) and skipper Ross Hunter (393) did well despite missing a few games this season.
Vice-captain Glen Williams was leading wicket taker, making the top 10 with 23 while Thane (20) and Anik Divicha (19) figured in the top 30.
