Hook seconds end season on a high
HOOK and Newnham Basics II chased down a target of 361 to beat visiting Ryde by two wickets to end their Hampshire League County Division One season on a high.
Sam Lovelock was Hook’s best bowler, taking 3-67 as Ryde smashed 360-5 from their 50 overs to set the hosts an imposing target.
Hook got off to a bad start with the bat, losing both openers with just three on the board – but they took control after that. Matt McNally (77) and Kevin Light put on 154 for the second wicket, McNally’s total coming off just 71 balls, while Ben Allnutt smashed 83 off 50 balls, putting on a further 141 with Light (114).
There were a few nervous moments after this but Graham Buckingham’s unbeaten 22 guided Hook to victory with two balls and two wickets to spare.
Hook will be the only north Hampshire side in Division One next season as Old Basing were relegated following a two-wicket defeat at Gosport Borough.
Basing made 227-9 and an opening stand of 115 did the damage for Gosport, who got home despite Nick Cooper taking 6-27 for the visitors.
They will come up against Basingstoke and North Hants III next season after the Bountymen were promoted thanks to a second-place finish in Div Three North.
Basingstoke wrapped up promotion with a comprehensive victory at Michelmersh and Timsbury.
Mike Smith made an unbeaten 70 – Callum Coombs hitting 50no and Saf Ahmed also reaching 50 as the visitors amassed 228-5.
Michelmersh were then bowled out for just 92, Lewis Benge taking 5-21 and Andy Neal 4-8, as Basingstoke won by 136 runs.
Whitchurch just escaped relegation despite losing by 40 runs at home to local rivals Overton on the final day. Nikel Patel hit 71 not out and Dan Johnson 50 as Overton reached 264-9, while Whitchurch were bowled out for 224.
Hartley Wintney II lost by three runs to visiting Littleton and West Hill, despite a great individual display from Will Ross. He took 3-19 as the visitors reached 195-8 and then hit 71 as Hartley ended on 192-8.
Hook and Newnham Basics III went down by 139 runs to visiting South Wilts III. David Batchelor took 3-28 as South Wilts made 262-8, while Hook were bowled out for 123.
Ramsdell have been relegated from Division Four North after losing their final game at Amesbury. The hosts made 300-7 and, while Michael Abbot hit 56, the visitors were restricted to 218-9 and lost by 82 runs.
AWE Tadley beat Sparsholt II by 50 runs. Having made 175-7, Tadley bowled their visitors out for 125, with Omair Kiani taking 4-24 and Mike Burt 4-23.
