Golfer Stuart Archibald finishes sixth in EuroPro Tour event
BASINGSTOKE golfer Stuart Archibald is up to 47th on the EuroPro Tour order of merit after finishing sixth at The Hotel Planner.com Championship.
The Worting golfer carded a closing round of 65 (-5) at Dale Hill, in Sussex, to jump up the leaderboard and into sixth, earning £1,200 in prize money.
A solid opening round of 71 (+1) left him quite a way off the pace but he avoided the cut with a second round of 68 (-2), making birdies at holes 14, 15 and 16.
The 29-year-old went into the final round knowing that he needed something special to put himself in contention and he produced just that.
He recorded seven birdies over the course of the round, four of them coming during an outstanding back nine of 31 (-4) that saw him shoot up the standings to claim sixth place.
Archibald ended up six shots behind winner Daniel Galvin – but only three off second place.
After a slow start to the season, Archibald has been in good form over the past couple of months. His performance at Dale Hill was his second top-10 finish in three tournaments after he finished ninth at the MarHall.com Scottish Classic.
In between these two events, he also finished in a tie for 42nd at The Sweetspot Classic, which was played at Longhirst Hall, in Northumberland.
Longhirst Hall was the scene of one of Archibald’s two victories on the EuroPro Tour, the Basingstoke man winning there in 2009, but he was unable to repeat that performance.
He got off to a poor start and was +4 after 16 holes, but birdies at 17 and 18 rescued an opening round of 72 (+2) and he survived the cut thanks to a second round of 71 (+1).
Sadly, he was unable to make any further progress, a closing round of 74 (+4) meaning Archibald had to settle for 42nd.
