HARTLEY Wintney have been relegated from Southern League Division One, despite winning by 14 runs at Fawley on the final day of the season.

Knowing they needed victory to have any chance of staying up, Hartley batted first and reached 231-8. Australian Lee Weiss anchored the innings with 82, while several other batsmen got starts and Chris Jolley made a useful 26 batting at number nine.

Fawley looked on course at 183-2 but Jolley and captain Scott Baldwin both finished with three victims as the hosts lost their final five wickets for just 16 runs, being bowled out for 217.

That gave the village side a chance – but, in addition to winning, Hartley also needed both Andover and Hambledon to lose their final games in order to escape the drop.

Hambledon beat Rowledge, who will join bottom side Hartley in Division Two next year, while Hook failed to do their local rivals a favour, losing by 132 runs at Andover.

Andover reached an imposing target of 284-7 from their 50 overs, thanks largely to an opening stand of 203 between Timothy Lewis (94) and Greg Dawson (92).

The Hook reply never really got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals, Ben Thane top-scoring with 43 as they were restricted to 152-9, meaning they end the season in fifth place.

Basingstoke’s second string lost by 69 runs at Havant II in their final Division Three game of the season.

Keith Harsham took 3-29 as Havant were bowled out for 225 and while Bradley Neal made 55, Basingstoke were dismissed for 156 and finish the season eighth in the table.
