Transfer Deadline Day Live Summer 2013
This live event has finished
- The summer 2013 transfer window has shut
- No new arrivals for Saints on deadline day
- Emmanuel Mayuka joins Sochaux on loan
- Saints have spent over £35m so far this summer
- Arsenal sign Mesut Ozil for £42.4m in biggest deal of day
Everton confirm Fellaini to United is done, for a fee of £27.5m, while the Toffees have added the signings of Gareth Barry and James McCarthy to Romelu Lukaku. Also, West Brom have signed Victor Anichebe from Everton. We're going to leave it there now. A quiet day for Saints, but they wisely did their business earlier in the window. Thanks to everyone who joined us today and who contributed to the blog. Do enjoy the next four months of relative calm. We will be back in January for more of this madness.
Reports are still suggesting that Manchester United have completed their deal for Marouane Fellaini in time, while they are also said to have finalised a loan move for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao. Confirmations awaited on both.
Romelu Lukaku has announced that he has joined Everton on loan from Chelsea.
Signed @Everton on a season loan :-)— @RomeluLukaku9 02 September 2013
Fulham have announced the signing of midfielder Elsad Zverotic from Swiss side Young Boys, just beating the deadline.
The clock has now hit 11 o'clock, meaning the window has shut. We await to hear of any final deals that just made it in before the deadline...
We're down to the last few minutes. Still a few big deals still expected to be confirmed before the window shuts.
Everton look like they could be very active in the final 20 minutes. They now appear confident of finalising a loan deal for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, while they are also hoping to bring in midfielders Gareth Barry, from Manchester City, and James McCarthy, from Wigan.

Sunderland, clearly feeling they haven't signed enough players already this summer, have taken their total number of captures to 14, after completing deals for Liverpool forward Fabio Borini and Napoli left-back Andrea Dossena.
On deadline day, it's traditional for huge numbers of supporters to mob Sky Sports News reporters who are forced to stand outside stadiums and training grounds. Of course, it doesn't always work like that, as this video from outside St Mary's shows. Nice moves, kid...
Bad news for Manchester United fans, with reports suggesting their move for Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera has fallen through. There is still just over 50 minutes to go, but this is heading towards being a really poor transfer window for the defending champions and their new manager, David Moyes.
One hour to go
Still no official word on Mesut Ozil's move to Arsenal yet, although that is not thought to be in any doubt, while Manchester United are - in what is extremely unusual fashion for them - still scrambling around to complete deals, with Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera their top targets. Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku appears to be the subject of a tug-of-war battle between Everton and West Brom. Saints remain quiet and, unless there is a very late surprise, that is how they will stay.
More news on Romelu Lukaku, with Sky Sports now reporting that the forward is heading to West Brom, and is snubbing Everton in favour of a loan switch back to the Hawthorns.
Quite a few deals are still waiting to be completed and announced around the Premier League. There are reports that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who was on loan at West Brom last season, could be off to Everton, which would be quite a coup for the Toffees.
A few updates on what is happening elsewhere:
- Everton's Marouane Fellaini is said to have handed in a transfer request at Everton, with Manchester United looking to sign him.
- United also hoping to complete a deal for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.
- Arsenal are soon set to announce the £42.5m signing of Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil.
- The Gunners have also been told that Chelsea will not loan striker Demba Ba to them.
Emmanuel Mayuka has already left today to join French side Sochaux on loan. Here's a few words from him, following an interview with his new club...
I am pleased to be here and am looking forward to joining my new team-mates and helping my new team. I will try to do my best to score as many goals as possible. I want to help the team so that we reach our goals.Emmanuel Mayuka
One Saints player who there has been a bit of speculation around in the last few days is Jack Cork, with Fulham linked with a bid for him. That one is a non-starter, though, with Mauricio Pochettino making it clear after Saturday's game at Norwich that he would not be leaving...
He’s a first-team squad member, he’s a part of this team. If we start selling players we’re only going to be left with just 11 players, so no (we are not willing to sell him).Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino
Arsenal are one of the most intriguing clubs to watch today. Arsene Wenger was speaking in his press conference after yesterday's north London derby victory, with a knowing smile, about producing a "surprise". That looks like being the arrival of the magnificent Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. But, before announcing that one, they have just confirmed the capture of Italian keeper Emiliano Viviano from Palermo.
Well this is a first, should be home in time to watch the fanfare as Jim White arrives in the @SkySportsNews studio!— @jordansibley 02 September 2013

Thanks to Dan for all his efforts today. Followers of previous transfer deadline blogs will know it's traditional for nothing to happen during the day while he runs things, then for everything to kick off once he's gone home. That looks unlikely today, though. Saints' business seems to be very much done, both in terms of players coming in or going out, but we'll keep going here through to the end anyway.
Think of it as David Tennant regenerating into Matt Smith in Doctor Who, or something.
As the evening draws in, make sure you're ready for the final count down as you snuggle up with your beloved in front of Sky Sports News.
A yellow tie is mandatory - to match the breaking news bar - as is a working volume button on your remote control to tone down Jim White's exclamations.
Ah, the old perennial favourite - the Wikipedia edit.
It's late this year, but we finally have one.
Southampton "legend", Ali Dia, has signed for Manchester United, apparently.
Just five hours left!
Sheffield United have taken Manchester City striker Harry Bunn on loan. No link to Saints, other than his name made me chuckle a little bit.
It's been a long day.
Premier League Update:
- Stoke sign Stephen Ireland on loan from Aston Villa
- The Belgian FA has been Maouane Fellaini time to go and speak to Manchester United
- Arsenal still not yet announced Ozil deal
- Teenagers across the country flocking to local Premier League clubs to pester Sky Sports reporters.
One of the staff members in the media department at Saints has tweeted to say he may have to stay late tonight.
Is he teasing supporters with a hint of a deal or is he just very bad at managing his workload?
Been writing an international preview practically all day. Might have to stay late tonight… #saintsfc— @JFBLucas 02 September 2013

Away from transfer deadline day, here's a video of the England squad arriving at St. George's Park ahead of this weekend's qualifiers.

I find it a bit worrying how these players, Forren and Mayuka come and go so quickly without making any type of impact. Who is recommending them? Les Reed? Is he still with us? Or does Poch now manage the scouting and recruitment of new players. Anybody know?
4:45pm Mon 2 Sep 13
Isgrove is a wide player with pace and that is perhaps why we might not buy another one. If we do, I think Kiyotake would not be a bad idea (especially since I'll be able to watch Saints on TV every match if he comes).
@the_saints I don't think there is any cause for concern. Pace on the wings will come from Clyne and Shaw when fit! #TransferDeadlineDay— @tposmatt 02 September 2013

Business is probably being done and we won't hear about it until tomorrow at the earliest........that
's what I am hoping anyway.
I very much doubt MP and NC work a standard 9-5.
3:36pm Mon 2 Sep 13
With Mayuka going too I'm sure saints will have additions to the squad. A few injuries would test us if not.
@the_saints can you please quote some reasonable SFC fans, not those obsessed with our 'lack' of pace and ignorant of our shape/style?— @atters89 02 September 2013
A lot of fans seem to be feeling that despite the good work done earlier in the window, Saints' may not have fully improved the squad as much as had been hoped.
The failure (so far) to get anyone to provide the width and pace provided by Puncheon and the fact the club is now back down to just three recognised strikers, seems to be worrying manner supporters - despite the three quality acquisitions made.
Is that just down to the frustration of a another dull deadline day or are they fair observations about the club's transfer policy this summer?
@the_saints awful, lost two very quick players and by replacing, loosing depth in pace:(— @DottGaming 02 September 2013

@the_saints Seriously sign a pacey winger! Especially now Mayuka has left! #TransferDeadlineDay— @JoelHenderson2 02 September 2013
Premier League round-up:
- Palace sign Adrian Mariappa from Reading.
- Manchester United to break their transfer record to get Ander Herrera from Bilbao for £30.5m.
- Arsenal offer Chelsea £1.5m to to sign Demba Ba on loan for the season.
- Mesut Ozil's medical most surely be over by now ahead of Arsenal move.
- Stephen Ireland close to joining Stoke on loan from Aston Villa.
2:56pm Mon 2 Sep 13
Mayuka was the pace option we need up front/on the wings.
Why pay £4m for a player who has not been given a chance in the first team!?
Ok he may not start every game but would prefer that option on the bench rather than Guly!
@the_saints they needed 2wingers at the start of the season and they still do tbh— @GarveyrichR 02 September 2013
2:40pm Mon 2 Sep 13
why is MP considering selling Jack Cork and why has mayuka gone out on loan? surely both are important players..Id rather have Mayuka coming on then Guly any day...winger, left back, centre back and maybe a back up to Boruc would all improve the squad...it's all very well having a strong starting 11 but it's a long season and a couple of injuries in key areas and we are left with the likes of Fox and Guly who aint gonna fire us into the top 10....also on gaston he does not have the same energy as Adam...when Lallana came off against Sunderland and again on Saturday we lost some of the energy he gives us...lots to be optimisitc about but to really start pushing on, especially as so many other teams are strengthening sensibly, we need a few additions...
The exit of Mayuka brings Saints down to just 23 first team squad members - the same number as you get in squads for international tournaments like the Euros or World Cup - 20 outfield and three goalkeepers.
Those 23 also include Calum Chambers and Lloyd Isgrove, with only three starts between them.
The Premier League has a limit of 25 players on the squad, leaving Saints with two extra spots which can be filled.

When Mayuka joined Saints, his fee was official undisclosed but thought by many to be around the £3-4m mark.
However, ahead of last season's game at Craven Cottage, Fulham boss Martin Jol said he had inquired about the player before Saints bought him, to be quoted a price in the region of £7m.
Speaking of Billy Sharp, he is now being linked with a move to Championship side Middlesbrough.
He spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, having come on for Saints against Manchester City in the club's first game back in the Premier League.
The loan deal will see Mayuka completely unavailable to Saints, as players cannot be recalled from season-long loans.
That leaves Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Dani Osvaldo as the only strikers in the squad - assuming the likes of Billy Sharp, Lee Barnard and Jonathan Forte are not suddenly brought back into the frame.
As we reported an hour ago, Emmanuel Mayuka is off to Sochaux.
The player has updated his Facebook page with this message:
The full text reads:
Well some of you are very well informed!
I just signed a year long loan deal with FC Sochaux in France 1st Division (Ligue 1). I will get game time there and hope score a few goals.
And now, on my way to South Africa to join our National Team. Thanks for your support and talk to you soon!!!
Still, if you think Saints' deadline day deals are lacklustre, just remember that Mauricio Pochettino doesn't have the imposing figure of Olympic champion Usain Bolt ranting at him, like David Moyes does at Manchester United.
Why are we always boring on Deadline Day? Last 2 Deadline days have been dead boring if your a saints fan imo #saintsfc— @CalCal256 02 September 2013
Reported #saintsfc target Pablo Piatti has been ruled out for 5 weeks with a hamstring injury. Not that I ever thought deal was a goer— @alex_crook 02 September 2013
Sochaux are lining up a move for Emmanuel Mayuka.
Mayuka, described by The Guardian last year as the 85th best player in the world, scored his first Saints goal last week in the 5-1 win over Barnsley.
Many people amazed at a product of Saints' youth system is the world's most expensive player - they seem to be forgetting a certain Mr Alan Shearer also held that title for a period, when he joined Newcastle for £15m.
Time for another Premier League round-up:
- Ozil has had a medical ahead of move to Arsenal
- Liverpool launching late bid for Juan Mata
- Odemwingie's move to Cardiff edging closer
- Sunderland closing loan move for Liverpool's Borini
- Villa make £7m bid for Libor Kozak from Lazio
- Everton will have to stump up £13m for Wigan's James McCarthy

The scene in London:
Gareth Bale isn't the only former Saint in the news today. Dany N'Guessan and Danny Butterfield are now free agents, having been released by Millwall and Carlisle respectively.

Saints said to have pulled out for a deal for Blackpool's Tom Ince last night, according to reports.
Only four per cent of Saints fans think the current squad is strong enough. Have you voted?
12:34pm Mon 2 Sep 13
I was a little perplexed with Cork's ommision from the bench considering the first team selection. It left us with few options.
Also the inclusion of Clyne AND Shaw when they where not fit enough to start meant that we had a very defensive bench.
There was some strange selections Saturday, including the bench...I`m still not convinced with the new manger even tho i support him.for me he`s not using Ricky correctly and has no plan B
Gareth Bale has now been officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player.

The two names being mentioned most often by fans in connection with a move to Saints today are Pablo Piatti and the less likely Aaron Lennon.
You can see the players Saints were linked to on the rumour round-up list.
A couple a Saints fans are more keen than others for some new signings - although it's not exactly what you think.
Steve and Michael Morrison have one of the most extensive hauls of Saints autographs ever amassed - over 2,000 - but need your help in getting the autographs of 40 or so that they don't have.
Arsenal's signing of Mesut Ozil looks to be virtually complete, for a fee of around £42m from Real Madrid.
Sky Sports News just showed another shot through the bushes clip from Staplewood - this time of Lee Barnard, who is one of the players expected to be on his way out today.
Away from transfer deadline day for a moment, Saints have revealed that tickets to see them take on League 1 Bristol City in the Capital One Cup will be £18 for adults, on September 24 at St. Mary's at 7.45pm.
Concessions will be £14, U17s £10 and U11s will be £5.
Just in case the excitment of deadline day wasn't already enough for you, Sky Sports are encouraging people to download and wear a mask of their presenter Jim White - you know, the Scottish one who gets really excited when a youth player from Sunderland joins Doncaster on loan.

Selling Cork would be a very bad decision in my opinion. I just don't see why we'd do that. Can understand Punch to some extent although I felt he was a decent impact sub.
As for Gaston, I think either we give him a nailed down place and let him settle or we may as well trade him in. He doesn't seem to be the sort of player who will fight for his place coming off the bench and rarely makes a positive impact.
Either we need to give him a consistent run to find his form and motivation or he's an expensive luxury.
Personally, I wouldn't want him to be rewarded for a lack of effort and think Adam is the better and more likeable option.
I do still wonder though whether we could consider trying Gaston in a more advanced Michu type role. Against Barnsley he again showed that his finishing inside the box is probably more natural than anything else we've got.
Away from Saints, Peter Odemwingie, the man at the centre of the absolute madness on the January deadline day, has been given permission by WBA to speak to Cardiff.
Also, Manchester United and PSG are now being said to be trying to muscle out Arsenal in their pursuit of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
It seems pretty clear cut that Saints fans think Pochettino needs to bring in a winger today.
The poll we started this morning currently reads as 83 per cent wanting a wideman to be signed today.
Liverpool are expected to confirm the loan signing of Chelsea's Victor Moses today.
Saints were interested in the winger, but he has opted to head to Merseyside.

Meanwhile, Billy Sharp and Jos Hooiveld are two players being linked with moves away.
One player being mentioned by Saints fans with a possible move to St. Mary's today is Tottenham's Aaron Lennon.
A couple of people claiming to be agents on Twitter say the winger is coming south, which has got many fans into a bit of frenzy - his pace would certainly be a welcome addition to Pochettino's side.
Over the weekend, reports came out linking Jack Cork with a move to Fulham.
Pochettino has said there has been no bid from the London side, but the national press suggested a £3m bid was coming.
Would you be willing to let him go, or is he too important to Southampton?
So all we need is a quick winger who can cross, pass, dribble, shoot and score. Great. That won't cost much then. #SaintsFC— @SaintsGirl_91 02 September 2013

if you look at the stats this season and the end of last season we are struggling to score goals ,we now have enough strikers in my opinion what we lack is players to create the goals ie wingers ,creative midfield ,lennon getting mentioned, would add something different maybe ince or mcmanaman we def need more options to break teams down
A lot of Saints' fans bemoaning that Rupert Lowe got rid of a sell-on clause when the Gareth Bale transfer was renegotiated after he came back to try and stop the club falling into administration.
However, there was no sell-on fee in the initial deal put together by the previous board, anyway.

We have to sign a couple more players in my opinion if we are really concentrating on a top 7 finish. Liverpool have signed 7 players, spurs will be up there with that number, plus other teams we should be challenging with to realise these ambitions are doing the same. I would do a player plus cash swap with RAMIREZ and BANEGA, get Lennon in and try a cheeky bid for Liverpool winger Sterling
Also, you may have heard a little something about a young Welsh lad moving abroad or something.

Exciting stuff on Sky Sports News; they've shown a clip - which appears to have been shot from a bush - of Mauricio Pochettino getting a bag out of the boot of his car at Staplewood.
No suggestion there was a Premier League player in the bag, however.
But do you think Saints need to bring anyone else in today?
Following Saturday's defeat at Norwich, manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested the club was open to the possibility of more deals being done - but only if the right player was available.
Of course, there is always the chance of players leaving St. Mary's too, with Dean Hammond the most recent player out of the door, having joined Leicester over the weekend.
Good morning and welcome to the Daily Echo's transfer deadline day live blog.
Saints have spent a lot of cash this window - will there be more splashed today?
