Hartley Wintney thump Alton in build-up to big FA Cup tie
HARTLEY Wintney warmed-up in the best possible way for their FA Cup preliminary round tie tomorrow night with a 6-0 victory over Alton in the Combined Counties League Premier Division on Monday.
They now face another league rival in the FA Cup in Badshot Lea, a game which is being played at Ash United’s ground (7.30pm kick-off).
The sides met earlier in the season and shared a 1-1 draw and Hartley boss Ben Dillon is expecting their next encounter to be just as close.
Dillon said: “They are a good side and it is going to be a tough game, but I am hoping we turn in a good performance.”
Hartley needed a replay in the last round to get past Kidlington, which they did in style, winning 5-2. If tomorrow night’s game ends in a draw, then the replay will be on Tuesday evening at Hartley.
The village side continued their excellent home form as they hammered local rivals Alton 6-0 on Monday, but they only led by a single goal at the break from Shane Hollamby.
They then turned in a five star second-half performance as Hollamby scored again, before Chris Williamson, a brace from Ryan Stephens, including a penalty, and Ashley Lloyd put them out of sight.
It was a far cry from last Saturday, when a depleted side lost 4-0 at South Park.
Talking about the games, Dillon said: “We had eight missing on Saturday and paid the price, but against Alton we finished our chances and it was great to see Ashley Lloyd score as it was only his second game back after breaking his ankle.”
