Kevin Light leads Stratfield Turgis to Guy Jewell Plate victory
STRATFIELD Turgis started the biggest week in the club’s history in the best possible fashion by winning the Bluebird Care Guy Jewell Plate as they beat Ropley by 30 runs at May’s Bounty last Sunday.
After winning the Plate in their first ever appearance in the competition, this weekend the club will hope to make it double promotion for their first and second XIs in the Berkshire League.
Having been put into bat by Ropley, the victors lost opener Mark Walton quickly, but after that the innings was built around a number of good partnerships with Kevin Light.
Other opener Jimmy Wright (18) and Light moved the score on to 40, before Wright was trapped leg before by Martin Peters and by the 10th over they had reached 47-2.
Martin Dyson (29) and Light added 46 for the third wicket as Stratfield looked to build a score to defend.
Light took up the mantle ending unbeaten on 63. His 53-ball knock saw him hit two maximums as well as six fours as they finished on 133-4 from 20 overs.
The Ropley reply got off to a good start as openers Nick Gerrard (32) and Rob Smith (12) put on 43 in the first seven overs.
However, star bowler Nathan Field (4-21) removed Gerrard thanks to a catch from Giles Cutler and then a Tom Clay run out accounted for the other opener.
Clay then clean bowled Andrew Walker as Ropley slumped to 49-3, and from there they never recovered and with Wright (3-25) getting among the wickets they were soon 67-6.
Sam Newens (19) tried to get his side back in the game, but with his departure at 82-9 the writing was on the wall, even if a last man partnership of 21 got the score to 103.
A jubilant captain Wright said: “I would have bowled first given the conditions, but we were aiming for 120, so 133 was a bonus.
“We then bowled and fielded really well and as a team. Let’s hope we can continue the celebrations with a double promotion.”
