Yateley win Guy Jewell Cup
BEATEN finalists last year, Yateley went one better this time around as they won the Bluebird Guy Jewell Cup for the first time in their history at May’s Bounty on Sunday.
They enjoyed a comfortable seven-wicket win over Hartley Wintney, whose 115 proved not enough, especially once Andrew Nibblett (44) joined opener Jon Dow (48) at the centre.
Hartley always needed early wickets and got a couple thanks to Chris Jolley trapping Ryan Bone leg before and an excellent catch from Will Phillips removing captain Tom Wood.
However, Dow and Nibblett then shared a third-wicket stand of 67 – Nibblett unlucky to be run out as a Dow’s drive down the pitch was deflected onto the stumps by Jamie Teale.
Earlier in the game, Jolley (10) and Phillips (20) gave Hartley a brisk start, but a good spell from Nibblett showed the run rate down, with only top scorer Scott Baldwin able to find a way past the field in his unbeaten 52.
Hartley captain Dave Arnold said: “We didn’t score enough. We needed around 140, but they bowled tightly and it was always going to be difficult to defend 115.”
As well as picking up the cup trophy, Yateley’s Nibblett won the Rita Thompson Memorial Cup for his man-of-the-match performance, while teammate Harry Bartlett picked up the Guy Jewell Trophy for the best bowling performance in the competition.
The batting award went to Hartley opener Phillips for his 102 not out in the semi-finals.
