Hants need win to keep season alive
Hampshire need to win their final YB40 group game at Derby on Bank Holiday Monday to keep their season alive. The Royals have the best YB40 record in the country but, if they lose to Derbyshire, who can do Hampshire a favour by beating Essex at Colchester today, they could still be prevented a place in the last four.
If Hampshire fail to reach the last four, Monday’s game could be Dimi Mascarenhas’s last for the county and his last in any form, writes SIMON WALTER.
Hampshire’s poor LV County Championship form means failure to reach the latter stages of the 40-over competition would effectively end their season.
They still have five Championship matches left but are 51 points off second so have surely left themselves with too much to do to mount a promotion charge, even with their next two games being against leaders Lancashire at Southport, which starts on Wednesday, and Northants the following week. Michael Roberts has retained his place in a 13-man squad for the must-win game on Bank Holiday Monday, but Michael Carberry and James Vince will return at the top of the order following England Lions duty, with the Royals needing two points to be assured a home semi-final.
Danny Briggs will also return following the Lions’ final 50-over game against Bangladesh A at Taunton tomorrow, and replaces 16 year-old Brad Taylor, who plays for the academy against Ventnor today.
Hampshire: Vince, Carberry, Adams, McKenzie, Ervine, Dawson, Wheater, Mascarenhas, Wood, Briggs, Griffiths, Riazuddin, Roberts.
