Gold medal for Owen Richardson at Southern Championships
BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants athletes came away from the Southern Counties under-15 and under-17 Championships with five medals.
A total of six youngsters from the Down Grange club made the trip to Ashford, in Kent, for the event – and it was an especially fruitful journey for brothers Myles and Owen Richardson.
Owen claimed Basingstoke’s only gold medal of the event, sprinting to victory in the under-15 300m in 37.01sec, while he also won silver in the 200m, clocking 23.88sec in the final.
Myles won a pair of silver medals, finishing second in both the under-17 100m and 200m. He clocked 11.23sec for the 100m despite running into a strong headwind, while he completed the 200m in 22.14sec.
The other Basingstoke medallist was Katherine Abel, who won silver in the under-15 javelin thanks to a throw of 30.47m.
James Beeks reached the final of the under-15 1,500m, finishing eighth, while Jonty Davison was fifth in the final of the under-17 400m hurdles. Elizabeth Butler-Clack was sixth in her heat of the under-15 200m.
The Richardson brothers also enjoyed success at the South of England under-15 and under-20 Inter County Championships at Hendon a week earlier.
Competing in the under-15 300m, Owen finished second in 36.79, while Myles was sixth in the under-20 200m, clocking 22.56sec.
Beeks was sixth in the under-15 800m, while Lucy Bomphrey finished fifth in the under-20 100m thanks to a personal best run of 12.39sec, though she failed to make it beyond the heats of the 200m.
Isaac Cox was fourth in the under-20 110m hurdles, an achievement matched by Lucy Wildash in the under-15 1,500m. Luca Chiossone failed to reach the final of the under-20 800m, finishing fifth in his heat.
