FA Cup exit for wasteful Whitchurch United
Missed chances cost Wessex League Premier Division side Whitchurch dear as they were knocked out of the FA Cup 2-0 by visiting Bristol side Hallen in Tuesday night’s replay.
Home boss Jim Macey said: “We are playing midfielders up front as I haven’t risked playing the youngsters up to now but I may well freshen the side up for Saturday and Monday.
“We will have Jason Graham in the squad and once he is match fit he will score goals. At this level we can’t afford to waste chances.
“I don’t think Hallen were better than us and I told the boys they have the chance to prove it when we go there again on September 7 for the FA Vase tie.”
The Jamboys dominated for half-an-hour without finding the net before almost inevitably going behind to a free-kick for a foul just outside their own penalty area.
The Jamboys should have been out of sight by then as the visiting goalkeeper presented the ball straight to Curtis Angell, who could not finish from inside the area, while Isaac Sedu, Pa Touray and Luke Walker all squandered good chances.
Whitchurch’s Tom Hindmarsh’s made a double save and at the other end Angell’s glancing header from Sedu’s cross shot was just wide.
Hallen rode the storm, went ahead before the break and took control after the interval to win the tie 2-0.
In the first game last Saturday, Whitchurch had two chances with Alex Dockree and Alex Pickering early on and then Hindmarsh mad a couple of good saves, before Hallen took the lead with curling 25-yard strike.
With 20 minutes to go Macey made a triple change as Lee Hamilton, Shane Lock and Ashley Ledger all came on and it did the trick as from a James Tennant shot, Ledger netted the rebound.
Whitchurch have added to their squad with the double signing of Scott Hassell and Jason Graham.
Hassell had a four-year spell at Ryman League Corinthian Casuals and last year played in Canada.
Striker Graham arrives from Hartley Wintney and once fit will add even more firepower to the forward line.
Whitchurch return to league action on Saturday, with Folland Sports the visitors, while on Monday they are at Downton.
