Basingstoke Spades so close to securing bowls league glory
THE Whitchurch League Division One title has been virtually sewn up by Basingstoke Spades after victory in a top-of-the-table clash with Kingsclere (49-46).
Howard Park A just shaded Andover B (51-48) to hang on to third place, while there were wins for Alton over Andover A (63-50) and Littleton Leopards against Hook (61-42).
The surprise of the week was St Mary Bourne going down against Hyde Abbey (82-47).
Oakley A still head Division Two having defeated Hook Hares 56-43, while Howard Park C have probably thrown their chance of promotion after losing to strugglers Oakley B.
Old Basing enjoyed a big win over Kingsclere (71-40) and St Mary Bourne Eagles beat Marnell B 53-45.
In Division Three, the leaders are still Whitchurch Yellows, despite their defeat to Old Basing Roundheads (49-44).
Thornycroft B beat Basingstoke Jokers 47-46 to climb off the bottom, although they have played more matches than those below them. Marnell A beat Friary 50-34 but remain in the bottom four.
Basingstoke Diamonds clinched promotion from Division Four by beating second-placed Andover C 57-34, while Howard Park B beat St Mary Bourne Merlins 47-44.
The Stan Hardman League is in the last week of competition with just one result to affect the play-offs.
In the Central Division, Howard Park need four points against Odiham to pip Medstead to the runners-up slot behind AWRE.
The Eastern division has been won by Cove with Fleet Cygnets second.
The Southern division went to Alton Social, just half a point ahead of Four Marks, while the Western top two will be Whitchurch and Andover.
Whitchurch are in the driving seat in Basingstoke District Bowling Association Fours Division One, while Alton are home and dry as champions in Division Two, with Howard Park set to finish second unless Thornycroft can manage 20 points from their last four matches.
