Hartley Wintney's Chris Jolley and Will Phillips share massive Guy Jewell stand
HARTLEY Wintney’s Chris Jolley and Will Phillips shared the second highest opening stand in the history of the Bluebird Care Guy Jewell Cup to guide their side to a 113-run victory over Basingstoke Hockey Club on Tuesday night.
The pair shared an unbroken partnership of 246 from 18 overs, which was just short of the record of 271 set by the Willcock brothers Nick and Richard when they played for Old Basing.
Jolley’s promotion up the order paid dividends, with the opener scoring an unbeaten 125 from 56 balls, which included 20 fours and four sixes.
Will Phillips finished on 102 not out from 46 balls, having three sixes and 13 fours to his name.
Grant Rouse led the Hockey Club reply with 86 as they reached 133-4.
Hartley will now face holders Basingstoke Development XI tomorrow night at May’s Bounty in the second semi-final.
On Monday, Yateley made the final for the second consecutive year, beating Hook and Newnham Basics by eight wickets.
The beaten finalists last season had Hook 65-6, before a half-century from Ben Allnutt saw them recover to 126-6 as Harry Bartlett (3-16) did the damage with the ball.
Yateley cruised to victory with over seven overs to spare as Ryan Bone (44) and James Halson (58) scored the bulk of their 130-2.
The second semi-final of the Plate competition takes place tonight as Sherfield face Stratfield Turgis at May’s Bounty.
It is the second game this week for Sherfield as, thanks to an unbeaten 75 from Steve Dummer, they beat Rotherwick by 11 runs, making 126-4 before bowling out the opposition for 115.
