Hampshire Regional League round-up
OLD Basing II claimed a narrow 14-run win in their top-of-the-table clash with St Mary’s, a result that saw them leapfrog their visitors in the Hampshire League Regional Division Two standings.
St Mary’s went into the game second in the table but are now down to fourth, while Old Basing have replaced them in the runners-up position, writes John Boyman.
Ian Bentley took 3-34 as Old Basing were bowled out for 157 and while Oli Neal made 57. Malcolm Curtis took 3-5 as the church team were dismissed for 143.
Odiham and Greywell look set to run away with the title and they extended their lead at the top with a one-wicket win over hosts Thruxton. Robert Froome took 5-26 as Odiham set up victory by bowling the home side out for 164 – but they struggled with the bat, needing their final pair to get them over the line.
Herriard are also in the hunt near the top of the table and they beat hosts Burghclere by 108 runs.
Gareth Cloutt made 50 before Spencer Champ smashed an unbeaten 125 and Alex Harding 55 not out, the pair putting together an unbeaten partnership of 173 as the visitors reached 283-2. Kevin O’Brien led the Burghclere reply with 90, but Andrew Butler and James Down took three wickets each as Herriard bowled them out for 175.
Hartley Wintney III continue to struggle near the bottom, being bowled out for 104 and losing by nine wickets at Upper Clatford.
Basingstoke and North Hants IV remain third in Division One North despite losing by six runs at Littleton and West Hill II. Ian Hill took 3-41 as the hosts were restricted to 197-7 but Basingstoke were bowled out for 191 in reply.
Kingsclere’s winning streak came to an end as they lost by 38 runs at Tichborne Park II. Paul Gundry took 4-26 as the hosts were restricted to 191-8 but, while Mark Hirst hit 56, Kingsclere could only muster 153-5 in reply.
Sherfield on Loddon beat visiting Oakley by four wickets. Oakley made a good start but were tied down to 187-9, while some dropped catches proved crucial as Sherfield got home with six wickets down.
Struggling Rotherwick ITW claimed a rare win, Ian Finlayson’s 69 helping them to a nine-wicket victory over St Cross Symondians V, having earlier bowled their visitors out for 149. Ashford Hill were without a match as hosts Four Marks were forced to forfeit.
Odiham and Greywell II remain top of Division Three North East after another win, beating visiting Silchester by 196 runs. Kyran Munt made 156 and Chris Anderson 79, the pair putting together a partnership of 225, as Odiham reached 320-6 before bowling Silchester out for just 116.
Hook and Newnham Basics IV claimed a seven-wicket win over visiting Overton II, Harry Warner guiding his side to victory with an unbeaten 59 after Overton had been bowled out for 165.
Overton III also lost, going down by three wickets to struggling AWE Tadley II. Neil Butler made 85 not out as Overton reached 208-4 but Stuart Monger’s 63 helped Tadley home for the loss of seven wickets.
Basingstoke and North Hants V beat hosts Compton and Chandlers Ford III by four runs, Jay Ahuji taking 3-16 as they just about managed to defend their total of 145-5.
Ramsdell II went down by 19 runs at Twyford, being bowled out for 137 chasing 156-9.
Herriard have two teams in Division Four North East and they both enjoyed excellent days. The second string beat visiting Otterbourne III by 222 runs, while the thirds beat hosts Coldon Common II by 146.
Shane Dowling hit an unbeaten 107 and Julian Sidebottom 59 as Herriard II made 312-5, while John Holder took 5-23 and Alex Holder 3-15 as Otterbourne were bowled out for just 90 in reply.
Grant Good’s 125 not out helped the third team to 271-6, while Wayne Good took 5-13 as Colden Common were bowled out for 125.
Michael Constantine had a good day as Oakley II beat visiting Petersfield by 25 runs. He made 83 as Oakley were bowled out for 144 and then took three wickets, adding to Steven Bown’s 4-30 as the visitors were dismissed for 119.
Chris Turner made 96 as Odiham and Greywell III reached 243-9 against Midhurst III. Alistair Smee then took 4-44 and Ryan Lewington 3-8 as the visitors came up 33 runs short, finishing on 210-9.
Old Basing III’s trip to Ashford Hill II was called off as the hosts were unable to raise a side.
Struggling Whitchurch II claimed a rare win in Division Four North West, beating visiting Michelmersh and Timsbury III by six wickets. Martyn Dancer took 4-23 as the visitors were bowled out for 157 and then made 71 to help his side to victory.
