Lambert loving life with England
3:55pm Monday 12th August 2013 in Sport
Rickie Lambert is buzzing after his first day as an England player.
The 31-year-old Saints striker was handed a first England call-up last week, and has enjoyed his first training session with Roy Hodgson’s squad this morning ahead of the game against Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday night.
Lambert was then wheeled out to speak to press and was clearly loving life at the very highest level of the game.
He said: “I'm enjoying it and trying to take everything in. I'm trying to get here again and trying to do well and impress, and hopefully get another chance.
"I'm always confident I can score goals, I've always said that. Whoever I'm playing, whatever game it is, if I get a chance I'm confident I can take it.
"My main focus is trying to play well. And if I can score a goal that's brilliant."
He added: "I hope it sends a message. I never gave up hope that he would call me up.
"Hopefully that sends a message out that if you are performing, and you do believe in chances, you will get the chance."
England boss Roy Hodgson also dropped his strongest hint yet that Lambert will win his first cap against Scotland.
"He didn't look out of place in the training session. It was good to work with him today and I look forward to the next couple of days,” said Hodgson.
"I am sure when Wednesday evening is over I will know much more about Rickie Lambert."
