Shaw injury worry
5:59pm Saturday 10th August 2013 in Sport
Mauricio Pochettino fears that Luke Shaw may have sustained ligament damage to his left knee – but is hoping it doesn’t prove to be too serious.
The teenage Saints left back had to be helped from the field just before half time in the final pre-season friendly of the summer against Real Sociedad at St Mary’s after sustaining the injury.
Saints are awaiting a full diagnosis of the problem, but if it does prove to be ligament damage he is likely to be ruled out of the start of the season and is all but certain to have to drop out of the England under-21 squad for the fourth time through injury.
However, Pochettino at least sounded hopeful that the injury wasn’t a serious ligament problem which could keep Shaw out for months rather than days or weeks.
“In principle it is his knee but we still need to know what the doctors will say,” said the Saints boss.
“He has a problem in his ligament but we need to see what the doctors diagnose.
“We will have to see. He had to leave the stadium and the pitch and hopefully the problem is not as big as it looked and he will be ok.”
He added: “The pre-season is over now and we are doubtful and hoping it’s nothing too serious what happened to Luke Shaw.
“I think we have done well but there are certain things we need to improve from this game.
“We have a bit of a better feeling because we have been playing well without injuries and hopefully it isn’t too serious and we can count on him for the start of the season.”
