Basingstoke gymnasts claim five golds at British Championships
BASINGSTOKE Gymnastic Club tumblers had their best ever results at the British Championships held in LG arena NEC Birmingham.
In total 16 gymnasts qualified and eight of them returned with medals – five of which were gold.
The British Championships works in age groups which go in two year age bands from 9/10 up to 17 plus after this there is the senior category.
The event takes place over two days, the first day being the qualifier and the second finals. Two runs have to be contested in both competitions.
The five Basingstoke gold medallists were Maddie Gardiner (9/10), Loui Gardiner, (11/12), Charlie Arbuthnot (13/14), Conner Hamilton-Giles (15/16) and Kristof Willerton (senior men).
Maddie and Loui Gardiner are coached by Nick Proffit, while the rest of the gold medallists are coached by Anne Bidmead and Paige Clarke.
Silver medals were picked up by Charlotte Gough (11/12) and Megan Kealy (13/14), while Jamie Stanley (17 plus) collected a bronze.
The club also had six other finalists making the top eight in their age group.
Cameron Jones (17 plus) just missed out on a medal, coming fourth, while Keira Blakey (13/14) was fifth.
Three gymnasts achieved sixth place finishes. They were Danielle Honor (9/10), Yasmin Hamilton-Giles (11/12) and Charlie Patey (13/14), with Kaitlin Lafferty (11/12) coming seveth.
All the finalists are now preparing for the trials for the International Age Group Championships and the World championships.
l BRAMLEY gymnast Yasmin Taite won a silver medal at the British Championships in Birmingham.
The 17-year-old, who trains at the Pinewood Gymnastic Club in Wokingham, moved up the senior women’s group for this competition.
Taite had a superb qualifier, performing double somersault transitions, and lay third going into the final round, and came into her own in the finals with two terrific runs which saw her move up to second.
