Basingstoke sailor Luke Burywood takes part in World Championships

BASINGSTOKE sailor Luke Burywood may have missed out on a medal against the globe’s finest youth sailors – but he insists the experience sets him up nicely for the rest of 2013.
The 16-year-old teamed up with Tim Riley in the boy’s 420 at the annual ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Cyprus last month.
However the British pair found the going tough and 27th spot in their final race of the regatta meant they finished down the overall standings in 17th. Despite their overall position, Burywood and Riley showed glimpses of what they are capable of as a pair as they finished two of their 11 races in second and fourth.
And it is those positives that Burywood, who attends Aldworth Science College, is keen to focus on as he bids to build on his experience as quickly as possible.
“It was a different event compared to what we are used to,” said Burywood, who moved straight onto the class specific 420 World Championships with Riley.
“It took a little while to get used to it but once we did and got racing, we felt like we really understood what the event was all about.
“It was a lot of fun to be a part of it, there was a great set up and it was a fantastic experience. We have been really inconsistent but we know we have what it takes to get second places so we have the confidence that we do have what it takes to get good results at such competitive regattas.
“Our aims going forward are just to build on the week, take on board everything we have learnt and make sure we really understand as much as we can. We know what we need to improve on going forward and that’s the main thing.”
