Jonathan Barnes wins Basingstoke GC pro-am
FORMER Sherfield Oaks professional Jonathan Barnes claimed victory at Basingstoke Golf Club’s Captain’s Charity Pro-Am, shooting a three-under-par round of 67 to win by a single stroke.
The Ampfield man beat James Ablett (Lee-on-the-Solent) and Mark Williamson (Paultons Golf Centre) into a tie for second place after both shot 68 (-2).
Home professional Danny Fisher was the top north Hampshire player thanks to a four-over-par round of 74, beating Andrew Cloke (Bishopswood) and Ben Cummings (Tylney Park) by two shots. Darren Lovegrove (Dummer) finished with a score of 79 (+9), Kevin Maris (Dummer) and Carl Crown (Basingstoke) both shot 81 (+11), while Elliot Coates (Basingstoke) went round in 87 (+17).
The team prize was won by professional Steve Cowle (Steve Cowle Golf) and a group of players from the home club, Bob Randall, Bob Taylor and Paul Hackman.
Their score of 125 points saw them beat Ablett, Neil Shepperd, Nathan Skelton and Craig Ellwell on countback, with Barnes, Simon Taylor, Ross McMurchy and Vic Tilley third on 128 points.
The Tylney Park Classic Pro-Am was won by Nevill’s Jamie Harris, who shot a five-under-par round of 67 to beat second-placed Richard Wallis (Walmer and Kingsdown) by one shot.
Harris, who moved up to second in the PGA South money list with the win, produced a strong finish to claim victory, saving par with a fine chip on the par-three 17th before holing out from 15 feet to make birdie at the last.
