IT HAS been a busy month or so at Hartley Wintney Golf Club, with members making the most of some good weather to take part in a number of compet-itive events.

Kevin Pigney had plenty to celebrate at the end of the Men’s April Medal, playing some excellent golf, winning the event, qualifying for a national competition, and carding a hole in one.

The nine handicapper recorded a two-over-par round of 73 to finish with a nett score of 64 (-7), winning the event by four strokes. His finest moment came on the par-three 17th as his six iron tee shot found the bottom of the cup for an ace.

The win also means he will partner club professional Martin Smith in the Lombard Trophy, a national competition. Bradley Walsh and Andy Penfold were his closest challengers, recording nett rounds of 67 (-4), with Walsh taking second place on countback.

The fun actually began over the Easter weekend, with the Easter Stableford and Thomason Trophy being contested.

The Easter Stableford saw three tied at the top of the leaderboard on 37 points. Michael Sharp won on countback, beating Roly Newman into second place, with Dave Haselton third. Paul Marsh and Steve Davison won £28 each after recording twos over the course of the round.

It was also very tight at the top in the Thomason Trophy, with three players finishing tied on 35 points. Allan Nichols won on countback, with Derek Groves second and Les Pundy third.

The first midweek medal of the year was played in unseasonably freezing conditions but that did not seem to bother young gun Henry Doyle, who recorded a nett score of 69 (-2) to win the event. Groves was one shot behind in second, with Desmond Doyle a further shot back in third.

Henry Doyle had another good round in a junior Stableford competition, taking the honours with an impressive 44 points.

Scratch golfer Eddie Holland produced an excellent one-under-par round of 70 to win the Phillips Cup, a competition for members who had won a medal event in 2012.

Eleven players took part, with Holland finishing three points clear of John Kerby and Kevin Speakman, who both recorded rounds of nett 73 (+2).

Kerby took second on countback.

Martin Butler claimed the President’s Cup, beating Daniel Shilling on countback.

The event was played as a bogey competition, where players play matchplay against the course par. Butler and Shilling both ended their rounds four-up, while Michael Dawson was third, beating Barry West and Duncan Syme on countback.

The April Stableford was won by Andy Morgan, who took advantage of a fine day to score 41 points.

Rob Kemp was second with 40 points, beating Geoff Critcher on countback.

There was a really good standard of golf played in the Martin Vase Pairs, a four-ball betterball competition, with 10 pairs recording totals of 40 points or more.

Bob Crane and Steve Parker took the honours with 45 points, beating Neil Solomon and Phil Welch on countback. Chris Smith and Phil Hudson were a point back in third.

The men’s nine hole Stableford was won by Luke Hicks, who amassed 24 points to beat Chris Bromage by two.
