CRISTY Nash won a gold and silver medal at the Legend Open Shotokan Karate Championships at the Bracknell Leisure Centre.

The competition attracted competitors from Wales, Scotland, London and Cornwall. Nash, a pupil of Costello School, first took part in squad’s under-16s Team Kata and won a silver medal after five rounds.

The 15-year-old then won gold in Kumite (fighting) in a category for girls aged 12 to 15 and over five feet and either senior brown and black belt.

A delighted Nash said: “I was extremely happy with the result as I have tried to win this title for the last couple of years. I am now working towards the WJKA World Championships in Germany in June.”

The teenager trains at the Seishinkai Shotokan Karate Club trains at Lychpit Community Hall on Monday’s (6.15pm to 8.15pm) and Wednesday nights at Old Basing Village Hall (5pm to 7pm). For more information on that club see their website oldbasingkarate.com
