WHITCHURCH United continued their Wessex League division one promotion push with a 4-1 win at Andover New Street last Saturday.

The visitors took the lead after 15 minutes thanks to Sam Argent’s penalty after Luke Walker had been brought down.

Ashley Childs made it 2-0 and Walker scored with a fine shot as he bent the ball into the top corner for a three-goal advantage at half-time.

The home side pulled one back after the break, but Walker then set-up Argent for his second of the game, and Argent could have had a hat-trick but shot wide.

A delighted manager Jim Macey said: “It was another good result for us and Chris Smalley was absolutely brilliant in midfield.”

This weekend, Whitchurch travel to Hythe and Dibden and then on Thursday they have a derby match at Stockbridge.

Six more points there would keep ’Church well in with a chance of a top-two finish and promotion.

Tadley Calleva manager Danny Dolan was left gutted after floodlight failure at Barlow’s Park saw their Wessex League Division One game against high-flying Cowes Sports abandoned on the hour mark on Tuesday night.

The home side were leading 2-1, having come back from conceding an early goal.

Brett Denham looked set to equalise after Tadley had fallen behind, but was taken out by the Cowes goalkeeper who was lucky to escape with only a yellow card in the view of home manager Dolan.

Tadley did level the game thanks to James Tennent from the edge of the area and then Denham gave them the lead on 50 minutes, but soon after the game was halted.

Just four days earlier, Tadley beat visiting Fleet Spurs 3-1, with all the goals coming in the second-half.

Grant Powell netted his first for the club as he beat the visiting goalkeeper in a one-on-one after 50 minutes.

Soon after, the advantage was doubled as Danny Vickers headed home a Spencer Barlow cross.

Fleet then pulled a goal back, but Mario Nurse made sure of the win from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the box. Dolan said: “It was disappointing on Tuesday as we would have gone sixth in the league.”

On Saturday, Tadley travel to US Portsmouth and then they go to New Street on Tuesday.
