PUPILS from Basingstoke’s Fairfields Primary School were put through their paces in a fun day held by Chineham Rugby Club last week.

Six coaches from the club joined former player and Hampshire RFU’s full-time Community Coaching Officer Neil McGovern in a bid to get more young people in the area playing rugby.

Children of each age group received personal half hour coaching sessions and took part in a game of touch rugby, before being taught basic handling skills.

Chineham Rugby Club Chairman David Floyd, who participated in the event, is delighted that more youngsters are getting involved in the sport.

He said: “The kids really enjoyed the day and all the feedback was very positive. With England doing well in the Six Nations and the Rugby World Cup being hosted in this country in 2015, now is a great time to get children into rugby.

“A few of the pupils from Fairfields even turned up for training at the weekend, which is fantastic. We are hoping to return to the school again in September to inspire more young children to get involved.”

The club train at the Basingstoke Sports and Social club every Sunday morning at 10am and will visit Basingstoke’s St John’s C of E Primary School next Friday.
