Rain decimates football fixtures

HEAVY rain on Friday night and Saturday morning wiped out many football fixtures across north Hampshire.

Basingstoke Town’s home game against Weston-super-Mare in the Blue Square Bet South was postponed on Saturday morning, with the Camrose pitch resembling a lake more than a football field.

It was a shame for Town, who have found some form in recent weeks and will have been keen to keep the momentum up as they approach the end of the season.

Friday night’s Wessex League Division One local derby between Tadley Calleva and Whitchurch United also fell foul of the wet weather, as did Hartley Wintney’s home game against Camberley Town in the Combined Counties League Premier.

In the Hampshire Premier League, AFC Aldermaston’s trip to Locks Heath was rained off, but Overton United did travel Otterbourne, losing 6-2.

The Basingstoke and District Saturday League programme was also obliterated, with only one game being played – and it was a similar story in the Sunday League yesterday.
