Town hoping to banish bad memories by beating Weston

BASINGSTOKE Town manager Jason Bristow is hoping to banish a bad memory to the history books when Weston-super-Mare visit the Camrose.

The Camrose club lost 5-2 when they travelled to Weston back in October, conceding three goals in the opening 20 minutes of a terrible display.

Bristow admits that he was at his lowest ebb following that defeat and is hoping that his side can right a few wrongs when the Somerset side travel to Basingstoke on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

“The game down at Weston was one of my worst moments,” Bristow said. “It was during the period when Kevin Braybrook was in transition and I was down there on my own.

“It did not go well and we all came back a bit down so we are looking forward to them coming here. Hopefully we can put in a performance like we have in the last three games and get another three points.”

Town have improved dramatically since the last side the sides met – but Weston are having a terrific season and are very much involved in the Blue Square Bet South play-off battle.

Bristow said: “Weston have done ever so well and they keep getting points. They play good football but know when to mix it up as well.

“We just have to focus on us and if we play as we have done in the last three then we will be all right. It’s important that we keep ticking over now.”

Basingstoke stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a 2-0 win over Maidenhead United at the Camrose on Tuesday night, a result that moved them up to 12th in the table, nine points clear of the relegation zone.

“The Maidenhead game was important,” Bristow said. “We said to the players before the game that it’s easy to get up for the big games but Maidenhead needed the points just as much as us and we are in a good position now.

“We started really well and never looked back once we got ahead. We blew them away in the first-half and could have been further ahead at half-time.

“It was a professional display in the second-half. We kept the ball at the right time and fashioned one or two chances. At the end of the day, it’s three points, which is what we came for.”

Town will continue to be without defenders Jay Gasson and Ross Adams on Saturday, but left-back Matt Warner should be back in contention after returning from a business trip.
