Chineham have to work hard in bid to retain Kelvin Cup

THE quarter-finals of the Kelvin Cup proved highly competitive affairs, with both games played on Sunday requiring extra-time to find a winner.

Holders Republic of Chineham had a slender hold on their game through a Marrick Doyle strike until CI FC popped up with an equaliser minutes from time.

There were no further goals in extra-time so the tie had to be settled from the penalty spot, with the holders eventually prevailing 4-2 on penalties.

Overton United also had to endure half-an-hour of extra-time before finally seeing off the challenge of Pharmasol Appleshaw by five goals to four.

Top of Basingstoke and District Sunday League Division Two took on top of Division Three in the Bernard Cornish Cup.

Sporting Silchester took an early lead with Ty Aldridge scoring after some neat link-up play from the home side. Then with 20 minutes to go Barry Smith netted a delightful goal to give the hosts what looked to be a safe passage to the next round.

However, RAF Odiham Families pulled a goal back with just two minutes left, giving the match a scary edge for those final 100 seconds or so – but Silchester held on to win 2-1.
