Spartan thrown out of cup final

FINALISTS Pure Spartan have been thrown out of the Basingstoke B Cup after it was found that they had fielded an ineligible player in their semi-final victory over Overton United A.

An emergency committee of the Basingstoke and District Saturday League met to deal with the case on Monday and upheld Overton’s protest, which regarded the eligibility of Jack Tring, who scored twice in the semi-final.

It was found that Tring had played more than six matches for Whitchurch United Reserves, who play at a higher level, meaning that he should not have played in the B Cup.

As a result, Spartan have been removed from the competition, with Overton taking their place in the final, where they will face Tron Reserves.

The final was due to take place this weekend but it has now been moved to April 13 (kick-off 6.30pm) at Winklebury.
