National gold for Julie Roth

Julie Roth. Julie Roth.

OVERTON and Basingstoke Tae Kwon Do Club’s Julie Roth has taken gold at the British Tae Kwon Do National Poomsae Championships in Nottingham.

The 27-year-old was first up in her category and had to perform two Poomsae, demonstrating unnerving accuracy, power and discipline in her fighting techniques in front of the five judges.

She then faced a nail-biting wait as competitors from the top clubs across the country all performed, but her score remained unchallenged and a delighted Roth ensured she brought the gold medal back to Hampshire.

She said: “I ran and hugged my coach Coleen Reilly. I have faced a lot of adversity and have fought my way back so it was a proud moment.”

Roth, who was competing in the individual section of the K1 first senior female division, also paid tribute to her club coach Gerry Reilly as well as the technical director of France, Master Lee Won Sik, with whom she trains each summer.

Roth also enjoyed success in last year’s championships, picking up gold and bronze.
