Vyne claim Year 10 cup

The winning team from The Vyne. The winning team from The Vyne.

THE Vyne School claimed the Year 10 Basingstoke Cup with a nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory over The Costello School in the final at Winklebury.

The game was closely-fought throughout, with the sides sharing possession in the early stages but it was The Vyne who took the lead. A corner was not cleared properly and Mason Burton reacted quickest to the loose ball, volleying home from 15 yards.

Costello battled to get back into the game and hauled themselves level before half-time, Connor Stratton firing in an excellent shot from long range to make it 1-1.

The second-half was a more open affair, with both sides hitting the woodwork. The goalkeepers were also worked hard, with both The Vyne’s Jack Arthur and Costello’s Josh Minifie pulling off some excellent saves.

The deadlock was broken by Costello, a neatly-worked move down the right ending with a superb finish from Dylan Bardell – but The Vyne soon bounced back to level the game once more.

An excellent through-ball found Wayne Mpfofu, who showed fantastic composure to chip onrushing ’keeper Minifie into the net.

With no further scoring, the final was decided by a penalty shoot-out, The Vyne winning 4-3 to spark scenes of celebration as they lifted the cup.
