Basingstoke Saints reach last four of Kelvin Cup

BASINGSTOKE Saints eased into the semi-finals of the Kelvin Cup thanks to a single second-half strike against Kaiser Wessex on Sunday.

The game was tight and competitive throughout but Matt Cuthbertson broke the deadlock with quality play on the left before cutting inside, moving the ball to his right foot and chipping the advancing Kaiser keeper.

North Warnborough were unable to raise a side and were forced to scratch from the competition against the home side, Andover League Thruxton.

In the Andover President’s Cup, Basingstoke Sports & Social came a cropper against hosts Clatford Arms. They gave as good as they got in first-half but trailed 2-0 at the break and conceded a further five in the second period.

There was a thrilling contest in the Bernard Cornish Cup as Harriers took on in-form Division Two side Hammer & Tongs.

The first-half went badly for Harriers, who found themselves 4-1 down at the break, while both sides managed to score twice after half-time to give Hammer & Tongs a 6-3 win. Hammers’ scorers were Russell Williams, with two, and singles from Tom Walsh, Joe Harris, Ben Nicholls, plus a 25-yard lob from Richard Burford.

Chris Thomas and Finlay Thompson netted for Chineham but they went down 5-2 to Eastrop Eagles, with Tom Kelly, Anthony Marshall’s brace, Andy Dennis and Myles Englefield getting the winners’ goals.

AFC Golden Lion entertained South View, who led by two at the break. Mark Overington pulled one back but South View went on to win 4-1. Michael Morrissey scored one, Paul Garton two and James Hartwell netted with a low well-placed free-kick from outside the box.

The match between Sporting Silchester and RAF Odiham Families was abandoned due to a severe injury to a player on 80 minutes, with the score at 5-5.

FCT United reached the Basingstoke Sunday Junior Cup final for the second year running, beating in-form UWS 3-1.

Away from the cup action, CI FC beat AC Marstons 4-0 in Basingstoke and District Sunday League Division One thanks to a pair from Keith Davies and singles for Paul Oliver and Paul Davies.

AFC Hook won their Division Two tussle with Sambuca 5-2. Tim Barnett bagged a brace and Bax Bailey hit the target from 30 yards, while Matt Spargo and Philip Case netted one each. Tom Simmonds struck an early blow for Sambuca and substitute James Connolly got their second goal late in the game with a spectacular 25-yarder into the top right corner.

Wheelgame suffered a 9-0 drubbing from visitors SR FC. Brett Denham filled his boots with five goals, Ed Hall added two, with Carl Jenson and Joe Collins getting one each.

Dayers Fine Foods dominated against Railway Club and led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Steve Carter and Lee Neal. Further goals by Tommy Collingridge and Liam Murphy followed but Railway Club substitute Alan Tate scored a consolation goal late on.

Ghost began their Division Three match against Winkle with only nine men and conceded early on – but winger Craig Mumford levelled and Harinder Singh netted the winner in a remarkable performance.

North Warnborough Reserves visited B&NHF Trust in Division Four and got off to a flying start with Trevor Rogers pouncing after 20 minutes. The Trust soon equalised but Rogers scored again to put Warnborough ahead at the interval and he buried two more.

Hampshire Irons secured the Division Four title with a 7-1 mauling of White Hart. Jack Miller got a hat-trick and Mo Barry bagged a brace, while Simon Head and Craig Hopper also scored.
