KINGSCLERE sprung a surprise in the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Championship, beating third-placed Wheatley 19-12 at the Fieldgate Centre.

It looked likely to be a routine win for the high-flyers as they scored two tries to lead 12-0 – but Kingsclere pulled seven points back before the break, flanker Simon Goodson touching down and Anders Hiscock kicking the conversion.

Hiscock levelled the scores with a try in the corner as Kingsclere made a great start to the second-half but the winning score came with the final move of the match.

After some desperate defending, Kingsclere hacked the ball clear and centre Chris Guyatt won the race to the ball, kicking it on twice more before touching down, with Hiscock’s conversion the final act of the game.

Kingsclere will be looking to win again on Saturday as they host bottom side Faringdon.

There was more good news for Aldermaston, who beat mid-table Didcot 28-8 to move up to eighth in the standings. Dean Smith slotted an early penalty, before tries from Gary Homeward and Paul Castle put Aldermaston 13-3 up at the break.

Adam Ingrim forced his way over for another try early in the second-half, before Smith added another penalty. Didcot pulled five points back with a try of their own but Smith had the final word, securing the four-try bonus point and kicking the conversion himself.

Aldermaston are without a game this weekend.
