Owen Richardson. Owen Richardson.

YOUNG sprinter Owen Richardson moved to the top of the UK rankings with an impressive display in his first race of 2013.

The Basingstoke and Mid Hants athlete clocked a new personal best of 23.18sec for the 200m at the Birmingham Games to go to the top of the UK under-15 rankings for that event.

His brother Myles also had a good day, recording the second-fastest time of the day in the under-17 60m, stopping the clock at 7.11sec, before moving to fourth in the under-17 rankings over 200m with a run of 22.50sec.

Other members of the Down Grange club were in action at a Border Cross Country League meeting at Stoke Park, in Guildford. Runners from Basingstoke won both of the under-15 races with impressive displays. Lucy Wildash won the girls’ race, while James Beeks finished first in the boys’ event.

There was more success in the under-13 boys’ race, with Harry Richardson producing a strong run to claim victory. On the girls’ side, Tayla Wegg claimed second place, while Rebecca Poole was seventh and Rebecca Bullock ninth.

Catherine Edwards produced a fine finish to claim third place in the under-11 girls’ race, while Will Parkinson was the fourth under-nine boy home, with Olivia Rugman claiming ninth place in the under-nine girls’ race.
