WINCHESTER owner Paul McCarthy insists the club’s coveted striker Andrew White is going nowhere – despite enquiries from two of City’s Southern One South & West rivals.

Leaders Hungerford Town were the first to show an interest and, according to McCarthy, Yate talked to White after sentencing Winchester to a crushing 6-1 defeat at Lodge Road on Saturday.

Formerly with Reading and Gillingham, White first moved to the area to join Eastleigh’s full-time development programme at the beginning of last season.

Following a four-month loan with Dorchester, he had his Spitfires contract cancelled by mutual consent this time last year and spent the remainder of the season helping Winchester to the Sydenhams Premier title.

At 21, he is still hungry to get back into the professional game and McCarthy is confident his opportunity will come.

McCarthy said: “Hungerford tried to poach Andrew and Yate had a word with him on Saturday, which was a bit naughty.

“But Andrew’s going nowhere. He likes it at Winchester, he’s getting games for us and we’re doing all we can to help him get back into the pro game.”

With seven Winchester players unavailable on Saturday, Yate were simply too hot to handle.

Former Bristol City trainee Scott Wilson ran riot with five goals and Danny Wring netted the other. Liam Robinson bagged a late consolation for Winchester – his fifth goal in eight games – and McCarthy said: “The only positive for us is that we won the last half-hour 1-0.”
