Top prize for Southampton snooker ace
8:40am Saturday 2nd February 2013 in Sport
SOUTHAMPTON’S only entry in the Fareham Snooker Club Pro-Am walked off with the £100 top prize.
Prolific break-builder Jordan Winbourne reverted to an “impressive” safety game to beat Anthony Cutler (Poole) 3-1 in the final.
The 16-year-old from Hedge End, who posted a 136 total clearance in a league match in December, chalked up breaks of 82, 78, 59 and 52 in winning all four group-stage matches 3-0.
And he added runs of 50 and 56 in his 3-1 semi-final victory over Pete Oughton (Portsmouth).
Tournament director Colin Norton said the “two form players of the day” made the final.
“It was hard match-play, good quality safety, but there wasn’t a lot of opportunities for break building,” he added.
Winbourne, pictured below, said: “I was pleased my safety game was good in the final.
“I would prefer to be knocking in breaks but you have got to do both sometimes.”
And Cutler, 34, who used to coach at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club, said: “(Jordan’s) safety play was impressive.”
The previous Pro-Am at Fareham was also won by a 16-year-old, Adam Bobat.
Norton is considering retaining the round-robin format for the next event.
